Who Were The Cimmy-Five?

by wand143 » Mon Oct 22, 2007 7:43 pm

I'm hoping someone out there can help me with a mystery: a couple years ago, I purchased a 45RPM acetate by a group called The Cimmy-Five; it features a cover version of "Keep Your Hands Off My Baby" on one side and what seems to be an original, "Can't Cha Tell", on the other side. The only information on the label is the typed song titles and artist name - there is no indication of which studio cut this nor the general geographic where it may have been recorded. My only clue is that the dealer was from the Rockford, Illinois area but even my Chicago-area discography offers up no clues. It sounds like a typical four-man rock group circa 1963-1964 with a nice melodic (Fender?) guitar as the lead. The vocals on both sides are pretty good ("Keep Your Hand.." actually features a falsetto vocal on the chorus! pretty hilarious!) and overall it has a good "Midwestern" sound to it. Any ideas who these guys were? Googol searches offered up no clues.

Lots of groups or solo artists got as far as the "making an acetate/demo stage" but this doesnt mean that those songs ever were commercially released.
Its possible that The Cimmy Five paid for this acetate to be made and then took it all around town trying to get a deal without any success.
I havent been able to find The Cimmy Five yet as a released band.

Out of curiosity, I gave the Google News Archive a quick search and found a few references to the group.

All of these sites charge you to look at their archives. Your best bet might be to see if your local (major city) public library keeps any archives of major Mid-western newspapers. It seems they were popular from about 1965-1966. Since this seems to be a local group from the Midwest, there may not be much about them, but perhaps they are identified by their names in some of the ads, or perhaps some local newspaper did a write-up about them.

Joe, you were a huge help - THANKS!!!! I have to admit that the last time I tried the search was a couple years ago and since it was done by someone else, apparently it wasn't as thorough an effort as yours was. So, at least I can narrow it down to the Oshkosh area and indicate its locality on the record sleeve. I appreciate it. (Glad I found this site by accident!)
