I've just picked-up a Seeburg LS1. It plays okay when tripped manually, but as soon as it is switched-on it starts to scan and doesn't stop unless it is manually tripped or stopped with the service switches.

I have the manual, but was hoping that someone could just point me in the right direction to start the troubleshooting.

If mech scanning can be stopped via the service switch, the cause is likely the --cancel ramp-- and contacts under the Tormat plunger block.

On those later, reversed mechs that whole assembly often gets neglected. Check to see if any wires are broken that lead to those contacts.

It is also possible that there is poor connection on the mech plug that goes into the control unit and a remote chance that there is a broken wire in the mech harness tail.

If you "just picked up" this phono, was it set on it's back for transportation without proper bolts installed? This is a very common result of that situation. What usually happens in this case, is the subtract contacts that Rob described get bent and will no longer function. In some cases the whole "arm" that holds them, and the contact block (aka "frog") gets bent, and or broken.
You will probably need to slide the mech out ( follow caution, listed in my Seeburg Mech Guide), remove the pop meter housing and get your "eyeballs" down there to see why it is not functioning--"adjust" ( the whole "contact assembly" can be "bent"--carefully) as per Service Manual-- Ron Rich

Thanks Rob and Ron, I will check-out all those suggestions and let you know how I get on. As for transportation, I transported it upright - always do. However, I don't know how it was transported previously. I bought the jukebox with this fault from someone who had also purchased it with the same fault and hadn't been able to get it working.

You were both correct!!!!

There was a wire off and the contacts of the "Play Control Subtract Switch" were miss-aligned.

Those fixed, I now have the scan twice and stop syndrome.

Pressing the selector keys starts the scan, but I have noticed that the latch-bar solenoid is permanently energized (that can't be good), thus after making a selection the keys are not released.

I have an idea that the Tormat cable connected to the DCC may be causing some fault, as it is held in place with electrical tape. I am going to strip that and investigate, but I would really like to solve the problem of the permanently energized latch-bar solenoid first if you have any ideas.

Your MAJOR problem, if what you have written is true, is that a LS-1, should not have a "DCC" in it !
Check the 1.6 A fuse in the UDPU-6. Also check for 40 volts--pin 10, green plug at the SCC-7, (or optional, SCC-8). If both are good, check the timing relay contacts in the UDPU.

Sorry my mistake SCC-7.

There was no voltage at pin 10 on the green plug? The fuse in the UDPU is okay. All the fuses in the SCC are okay.
