Rockola 442 buzzing lockbar solenoid and "now playing" wheel alignment

by Juke-rocks » Tue Oct 04, 2016 2:27 pm

Hello. I have an issue with the lockbar solenoid buzzing occasionally. First I need to mention that with this machine, all contacts everywhere were burnt, corroded, or both. I've cleaned all more than once, but one needs more attention. I just don't know which one. It's now running very well except for this. When coins are inserted, it will buzz very briefly. When the letter button is then pressed, it will sometimes buzz until the number button is pressed. I don't let it buzz. I either hit a number button or open the dome and manually move the solenoid plunger immediately. Here's my question: from the parts diagram, which contact is causing this?
My other question is about the "now playing" wheel on the popularity counter. Again, from the parts diagram if possible, what fasteners lock this in place? It doesn't stay aligned as the basket turns.

Hi
All i can think of is either dirty switches at the latch and lockbar or a solenoid near its end of life and/or lubrication where the metal section slides. Sometimes pressing the reset button reduces the buzzing. The popularity wheel can be adjusted via two very small hex screws, better to use a hex (allen) key with splines

Hi Patrick,
The "buzzing" indicates a well worn solenoid--probably the "kick-out spring(s?)" is broken. Nothing can be done here other then replace the spring ( if you can gettem !),or the solenoid.
As for the wheel-- I dono --

Clones and Ron: thanks for your replies. Ron, from your reply it sounds like the solenoid is more likely at fault than the leaf switch contacts. Regarding the solenoid, should I remove the pin and clean it in any way? It's the one place I didn't use contact cleaner and Deoxit. Should I? I have another solenoid but this looks like a serious tear-down to replace.
Clones: I see on the parts breakdown Page 22, item #45 is a 3/16 hex head screw. Is this what I'm looking for, and can it be seen with the mechanism assembled? Last winter I had this whole thing apart, but missed that one.
Again, thanks for your help.
Patrick

Hi Patrick,
"Cleaning" the solenoid won't help, if the internal spring(s) is broken and lodging itself in the unit. Look at your "spare"--hold it with the plunger facing up- If good the plunger MUST NOT be touching the metal frame--springs should keep this from happening ( springs should push the plunger out, slightly, on both sides, if good). Replacement springs used to be available, but it has been at least 30 years since I had a source--You might try contacting Guardian Mfg. Corp., as they made (and may still ?) make them. Otherwise, you will need to do what most of us do--live with it
