Magnavox 45rpm spindle

by Skyrocker » Sat Jan 06, 2007 10:34 pm

Wondering if anyone knows where I can get a 45rpm adapter for my 1964 Astro Sonic...the original handbook (with a blank warantee!)states that on some models, the adapter is an optional item. I guess they never thought that people might like to play their 45's on their new record player! Go figure. Thanks for your time!

People could also buy spider inserts for their 45 rpm records, instead of using a different spindle. Anyone owning a record changer with automatic speed change uses the spiders instead of the large spindle. All of my 45s have spiders, because I own two different changers with automatic speed change. See the bottom of this post for a list of changers with automatic speed change.

I have seen enough of the Magnavox 45 spindles on eBay.

There are two different spindles for the two different models of Collaro Conquest changer. The changer with the offset spindle with the record ledge being part of the spindle body uses the black spindle with the hole in the top. It could be sold for any of the following:

Collaro Conquest TSC-640 or TC-340
Collaro Coronation TSC-740
Collaro Continental TSC-840, RC-440, or RC-54 (late)
Collaro Constellation TC-99
Collaro Sentinel RC-456
Collaro Studio 60
Magnavox 400, 600, or 800

The other spindle is for the later Collaro/Magnavox Conquest changers with the notched spindle with the retractable record ledge, which uses the shorter gray spindle. All Collaro/Magnavox changers with this spindle use the gray 45 spindle.

A list of record changers with automatic speed change:

- Glaser-Steers GS-77, GE, GED
- Heathkit AP-3
- Garrard had a version of the RC-121 I can't seem to track down. The 45s must be last.
- All Webcor changers with "Magic Mind" printed on the bezel or the record size sensor.
- Philco M-39, GS-77
- Magnavox Micro-Mini (but can't use spiders or intermix record types)
- Most jukeboxes made in the 1970s (but can't use spiders)
- Three Collaro Conquest changers I modified to add this feature, including the one shown on my web page. The 45s must be last.

There were also some record changers sold which required the spiders anyway if you wanted a stack of 45s:

- Webcor 246A*, 256A*, 356, 346, 100 and 120 series, and 77.
- V-M 405, 406, 407, 802*, 950, 955, 1555, and 1585
- Admiral RC-500, RC-550, RC438
- Crescent 500
- BSR UA-5
- Collaro 3RC531, 3RC532, 35, 53
- Dual 1200 series
- PE 2000 and 3000 series
- The Panasonic changers with the overarm in the dust cover
- Markel Duo Playmaster 74 and 75
- Wumo Dekamix, Ercona Dekamix
- Zenith 14050 series
- Silvertone 488.218, 488.219
- Emerson 700F 33/45
- All Luxor changers
- Fisher 302, 402, 502, Lincoln
- Philips AG-1000, AG-1002, AG-1004, 1401, 2975

Most of these had small holes in the overarm that fit over the spindle, or were never provided with 45 spindles.

* provides for manual play of 45, but no auto play of 7" records.

--

And there were some record changers which could not use spiders to drop 45s:

- All 45 changers and 45/16 changers (no small hole spindle)
- Garrard type A, A mkII, A-70, SL-95, SL-75, SL-72B SL-95B, SL-75B, SLX-3, Zero-100, Zero-92, 990, 82, GT series
- All BIC changers
- Zenith Twin-Seven
- RCA RP-208
- Radio Shack Lab 85, 92, 94
- Pilot RC-3

The Garrard, BIC, and Radio Shack changers listed can't drop 7" records without a large hole spindle, because the pusher shelf can't be set to 7".

Hi there,

I have a few extras, I can sell you one if you'd like for a very reasonable price. I play mostly stereo records, so I don't need all of these 45 adapters laying around. I have three or four of them. Let me know if you'd be interested and how much you're willing to pay. I'll sell you one for a really cheap price. My E-mail is MJMShowBiz2004@yahoo.com
