How to purchase a Victrola Talking Machine

by jonlouis » Wed Nov 10, 2010 7:23 pm

Hello I am looking to buy a Victrola and I do not know the differences (values) between the model numbers. Also what are the difeerences between the model numbers. I know that I want a "Tall" phono not the counter top. I have seen them going from 400.00 - 2500.00. I know that condition is crucial to the value but what else should I look for. Are there any models that are more rare that will have a greater value? Or do I mainly just look at the condition and not worry about the model/serial number? Any information will be greatly appreciated.

The Victor Victrola site has a complete list of models in the product section, and includes info on rarity & value for each model.
As for other brands of disc machines, it's really a matter of finding one you like, researching any info you can find on the make & model, and then comparing prices of other example that have been sold in the past.
The only machines I try & avoid like the plague, are those that use potmetal tonearms, because of their fragility & replacements can be impossible to find.
Fortunately, replacements are being made for pot metal tonearm support brackets used on some Victor Victrolas, and I think replacements can be bought for their pot metal reproducers too, but they dont come cheap.
