AMI Cadette help needed

Hi all
Just wondering if someone could help me. I have an AMI CMM-1 Cadette with amplifier # R-2576A. When I play a record there is no sound, apart from white noise which is audible whether a record is playing or not. Connecting an external turntable to the amplifier produced the same result. However when the amp is connected to an external turntable with external speakers there is sound, but not very loud. I have tested the cartridge (which is reversed on one channel) and all wiring leading to the input on the amp but it appears fine. Just to be on the safe side I plan to replace the cartridge/needle anyway but Im not confident that is going to fix the problem. I have taken a peek inside the amp and although the capacitors appear okay they are the old electrolytic type and quite a few of the resistors tested outside recommended values. I assume it could probably do with a rebuild but again I don't know if this is what is actually causing the problem because my knowledge of electronics is limited. If anyone could shed some light on the subject and tell me whether this amp is original to the machine (so I can purchase the correct manuals), that would be of tremendous help
Thanks!
