Lack of cleaning and lubrication.

Hi, I know most of the common faults for seeburgs scanning twice and selecting nothing. But this is the first time I have come across this. The jukebox was a KD200, checking the contact block I found it was adjusted as high as it would go which is a no no from the start. But it still did not have good contact with the tormat rivets. The reason, LACK OF MAINTANENCE, ie cleaning and most important lubrication. The two carriage wheels where seized solid. must have been for quite some time as the wheels where no longer round. they had worn down on one side so much that the rear of the mech had dropped considerably, hence making the contact block wave bye bye to the tormat. replaced the two carriage rollers adjusted the contact block and everything fine. so lubrication is very important. You check the oil in your car so check your jukebox could save you a fortune.

Yep--bet I have replaced about "1 million" of those wheels ! Once "dry", they tend to freeze to the shaft. My advice, when rebuilding the mech, is to remove clean both the wheels and shafts, then add a very slight drop of a graphite based grease to the shaft along with a liberal dose of 20 wt. oil. Mechanisms and bearings that I've lubricated with "Super Lube" have gone past 20 years with no dirt clogging and no drying out.

Hi Matt,
Are these bearings being used in an area where there is a motor operating that has a 60 degree Centigrade

Well Ron, I've used Super Lube in submersible pumps, it's waterproof stuff, and car engine mechanisms, so it handles heat well.
I also never need much of it - a "smear" of it in most cases, and packing ball bearings lightly. (a little goes a long way)
The stuff's slippery and smooth as heck.
Even hard to deal with sticky mechanisms and gears glide better afterwards, and the guide rails of CD laser mechanisms.

But then, here's the manufacturer's specs...
"Super Lube Multi-Purpose Grease with Syncolon (PTFE / Teflon) - 3 oz. tube. Patented NLGI grade 2 heavy-duty, multipurpose synthetic lubricant. Long lasting. Prevents rust and corrosion while reducing friction."

Temperature range from -40 degrees F to +450 degrees F

Well, to each his own--I won't use anything with PTFE in it--in our tests, it clogged brass bearings-

Hi Harry,

Back in the day (mid 70's) I worked with Norman Craven at Drandfield Novelty Company under their music division Selective Music.

We were working on Seeburg KD's, 201's, 222's, LPC's LPC480 at the time, wheels and the mechanisms crabbing along was common faults, usually down to no lubricant or far too much, like Ron, Norman fitted loads of themand I fitted my fair share.

HI, Alan I mainly mess with early 60s Rowe Ami's, mainly the JAL, JEL, Tropicana ect. The Seeburgs I just got into about Three years ago. The fault with the KD was the wheels had gummed up through lack of maintenance, I have now bought that KD after the filter choke went up in smoke in the power control unit. So it will be getting a complete overhaul. Bad point about buying it is the wife say's I have to sell one of the jukes in the house, so unfortunately the Seeburg 201 will have to go. :roll: Kind regards, Harry.
