Seeburg LPC480 carriage cycles twice then stops

by neotorin » Mon Jan 09, 2012 2:21 am

I picked up a Seeburg LPC480 today and it worked fine, played records. I accidentally selected an empty slot, the machine then seemed to act as if it was playing a non existent record for like 15 minutes. Finally I hit the reject button, which did not do anything, not even a sound. so I unplugged the unit and plugged it back in. Now the carriage cycleds two times and stops. After doing some initial research i find that this happens to be one of the most common failures. I'm hoping I just confused it, do I need to reset something? or re align something? The carriage always stops showing partially Q1 and S1(like its in between them) selected in the current track selection.

Any help troubleshooting / Isolating the issue would be greatly appreciated. Where should I start?

I also Just noticed that if I choose N1 (the left side of a particular record) the unit acts exactly as I specified above (2 cycles then stops). but if i choose P1 (the right side of that same record the jukebox starts to cycle right to the proper record, then immediately the carriage moves all the way to the left. I tested this and it seems to be the case with every record not just the ones mentioned above.

After this happens It will not respond to any selections. Even using the service switch to tell it to scan does nothing, normally the scan via service switch works fine prior to selecting a right side of a record

Amongst other problems, you have dirty/mis-adjusted 3M-1 (aka. W) contacts.
Continuing to operate the machine, will complicate the problem, and may cause more, serious, problems.
Clean/adjust the contacts per the Service Manual-- and I humbly suggest a copy of my "Seeburg Mechanism Guide" should be of help to you. PM me if you wish to purchase a copy. Ron Rich

Ron,

Thanks for the info, ill check out the 3M-1 contacts assuming I have the correct manual. I do have a manual for the jukebox, but I believe it is the manual that came with it. It does not specifically state "Service Manual". Would the service manual be a different manual? Ill look and see if it addresses cleaning the #M-1 contacts.

The Jukebox is in excellent shape, and the components seemed to be in working order before this started. I would really like to go through it and clean up the interior including the carriage mechanism and re-grease. I would like to address the initial issues specifically first so that I know I have a working unit to test between addressing the different pieces and cleaning them up.

Thanks!
-Ryan

Ryan,
I have no idea which "manual" you have--but in any case, Service Manuals were written prior to a model's introduction, and very little, if any consideration was given to "time factors", such as plain old dirt-- My Seeburg Mechanism Guide, was written long after the mechanism was introduced, and I attempted to factor in such things, going from my experience. Ron,

I was able to clean the "W switch" as you mentioned it was dirty / greasy. The unit now works perfectly, although it definitely needs a tune up. Boy was it difficult figuring out what the "W switch" was without a decent manual  . I cant wait to take a look at your guide. Once it comes in I think my next project will be to clean up the mechanism as there is a lot of oil all over the place some old and sticky, some seems new. Any suggestions for preventative maintenance aside from keeping things clean and oiling the mechanism?

really appreciate the help!

-Ryan
