AMi "Sound Reverberation System" ?

by Las Vegas Jukebox » Sat Jan 24, 2015 9:43 pm

I have a 1960 AMi jukebox. The cabinet has, what appears to be, an original sticker that says "This Equipment ........" "Sound Reverberation System". Does anyone have any idea what this is/was? From a quick look at the jukebox I don't see anything which looks like an add-on. It has the correct standard amp and no extra transformers that I can see.
Regards
Keith

Hi Keith,
Around then,
"Reverb" was the latest some "marketing genius" was using to hype the equipment--so at least two major jukebox makers offered it as a "kit", or perhaps in AMi's case, factory installed ?? There was at least one "aftermarket"--one size, fitz all, company, making them. Ron Rich

So, should I be looking for a piece of hardware?

Yep, reverb tanks were the fad in the late 50s-early 60s I've never seen one in a juke. I have a Martin Audio spring reverb in the rack out at one of my locations which I had considered using to enhance the sound when I installed it in 1998. Never used it after they opened. The place is big and noisy enough without help from me.

My aunt's neighbors had a Blaupunkt New York -just like this one in their apt: http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/blaupunkt_ ... tereo.html. It had a reverb of some sort, but it sounded more like stadium slapback than hall reverb and was not continuously adjustable, just had two or three positions or "Off". They offered it to me when they moved out in late 1990 but I had 12 jukes in the apt by then so....

In the 80's I had a 1964 Phillips slimline console in my bedroom that had a Hammond spring reverb and was adjustable. When set to just a slight touch it did give a bit of depth to dry material.

Thanks for the extra info Rob.

I don't know if this jukebox has it or not. It obviously did at one time because of the sticker, which looks to have been there since the jukebox was new. But I don't know what to look for inside the jukebox, so I don't know if it still has the system or if it has been removed. I was hoping someone would have come across the exact same item on an AMi. From what I can tell the amp is all original and there doesn't seem to be any additional parts. That said, if it was some sort of upgrade to say the crossover unit, or an attachment directly to the speakers then perhaps it does still have it.

Keith

Those spring-delay reverbs always sounded like crapola.
The Motorola console stereos of the early 60's had it, called "VibraSonic".
I never heard one that was worth using, they gave me a headache.
The Internet is a marvelous thing, however it's not a good substitute for actually being there.

H Keith,
Appearance wise, all that I have seen are housed in a shallow metal box, containing a coil spring about 6-10 inches long.

I remember them in some more expensive radiograms (that's UK speak for phonographs), in the early sixties, . They looked like boiling ring elements on the rear of the cabinets.

I had a 1964 Chrysler Newport that had a spring reverb unit. It actually sounded pretty good.
