Sonora phonograph question/help...

by Phonophan79 » Fri Mar 16, 2007 12:18 am

Greetings all!

I'm having a little trouble finding information on the web concerning this unit... So If anyone has a moment for more of my questions, your time is always appreciated! I drove 1.5 hours each way today to pick up this phonograph for $100. I think it was a good find?

I was able to find on the web that someone else had a photo in their collection of a similar looking unit and labeled it as a "Sonora Troubadour". Here is my unit:

Image

1) Can anyone verify that this is what I bought?

2) What's the general consensus on the "Sonora" brand?

3) It cranks and plays and has a great sound! The motor does seem to be making a light "click-click" sound with each revolution. As stated, I am new and I am not used to hearing these wind up motors so I am not sure what the "correct" sound is. Should it be silent?

4) Can anyone date this unit?

5) Did this unit originally have a grill cloth?

6) Does anyone have or know of a copy of this manual?

Thanks for your time!

This guys a bit of a sonora fan!
http://www.angelfire.com/nc3/talkingmachines/

If you look through the page, you'll find a bit of info on sonora's, and a copy of the manual for the "baby grand". It's not the same as your's, but the info should still be relavent. Maybe if you contact Dan, he might be able to shed some light on your model.
I've only seen one sonora in my travels, but they are good quality machines, and quite collectable. I think you did just fine for $100!
The click you've mentioned could be a number of things. Once again, you'll probably have to unscrew the motor board and have a look while its running. It could be a damaged gear, or even a simple adjustment. It's best not to use it to much though, until you find the problem. If the govenor is out of wack, you could end up stripping the fibre gear that drives it.

I just came across the "Supreme" with matching cabinet. Going to auction by Christmas. Anything else on this set would be greatly appreciated Raybro! Thanks, Tom
