Do you have a Service Manual for this machine ? If so, it should show this wire on the schematic---Does the system mute between selections ? If so, that is not the mute wire ?? If it does, I would not worry about that wire, since it appears to be capped --I think it is for an "option", of some nature--
This wire would not impact audio quality--

Hi Steve,

It would seem that you are floundering in the dark, I suggest that you pm Ron and take him up on his kind offer to repair your amplifier, you will find it money well spent.

Down to one issue I can't figure out. When a record starts playing, it is loud for the first several seconds and then it dies down. There is no muting between selections either. Any ideas?

Yep--simple--your mute relay is not being energized, so the AVC is running wild--Did you remove the amp ? If so, did you remove the pre-amp PCB--and if so, when replacing that PCB did you re-connect the mute plug to it ? Is the "outside mute plug" in place ? On RARE occasions, I have seen mute relays fail on these amps ? If that's not it--look at the schematic--muting is accomplished via the MCC in that model phono--izzit working right ? Are the wires all connected (common to have "cold solder joints" at the plug headers, and common to have bent pins in the plug itself). Ron Rich
