How to test a 100 select o matic motor

Can the 4 wire Westinghouse or Bodine motor be tested to see if it runs correctly (or at all), without it being installed in the mech? If so, which wire pair colors are forward and reverse. Would the start capacitor be needed?
Thanks

Hi Steve,
Yep--there is NO, "start capacitor" it's a motor RUN cap ! Wire colors are shown in the Service Manuals--Eliminate the small, added cap, if shown--Ron Rich

Steve, the schematic will show the wiring but you can get a good idea of the coil condition be measuring the impedance

I have 100.3 (green-yellow) & 259 (red-blue) respectively on a known good KCI-42 (plastic wires).. A 10% variation should not indicate a problem. For test any non-polarized cap of approx 1mfd and around 200 volts can be used.
