Wurlitzer (model 3700) cam motor and gear question

by David R » Mon Oct 05, 2015 10:15 pm

I just aquired a Wurlitzer 3700. I've oiled, greased and cleaned motors, contacts, etc. New belts & rubber mounts. Found a couple of loose & broken wires. All in all everything works fine. Only one problem has arisen.
On occasion when returning a record to the basket (it's in the basket, just not released) the unit freezes up. I found that by disengaging the brake and spinning the nylon disc (at the end of the cam motor) it will start and finish the release part of the sequence. I pulled the motor out again and found that by rotating the gear counterclockwise there is a clicking sound (and vibration) coming from the sealed gearbox. Clockwise everything is smooth. The counterclockwise motion at the gear is outputs the clockwise motion of the nylon brake disc. I assume there is an internal gear problem. Note that the clicking sound is not constant but just a portion of the rotation. There appears to be more resistance in the area of the clicks.
I assume the gear box (part of motor ass'y 136782) is my problem. Any thoughts as to any other possible cause. Should I bite the bullet and take a chance on purchasing a used unit?
I'm going to reoil the motor and reinstall for another try.

tnx

Hi David,
Not quit sure what you mean by "freezes up" ? If the brake is engaged, it would seem to me that's when the motor "should be" stopped ? I think the motor power is removed when the brake is applied ?? I have not worked on many, but the only problem I have had with that motor, is the brake pad (cork) gets oily, and does not stop the motor on time--are you sure that's not what's happening here--motor over runs--record is re-clamped ?? Ron
Freezes up is probably the wrong terminology. The gripper arm is in place to release the record but does not. The brake is applied. I manually release the brake and spin the nylon disc clockwise, the motor picks up speed and the gripper arm releases the record and all operations return to normal. 1 or more records play normally and then the problem sequence happens again.

David,
Something "don't make no sense" here--what is applying the brake ( If my memory serves me the brake is actually an "un-brake"--a coil operates to pull it off the plastic wheel, and relaxes to apply it ) ?? I think both the motor and the brake operate off the slip-rings on the cam, that also moves the gripper--- see the schematic-- Ron Rich
