ANSWERED: Cable for SS160 remote control wiring

I have a Seeburg SS160 and recently added the powered remote control. Trouble is, the wiring is so short I have to lay the control on the jukebox. I'd like to mount it on the wall behind the bar on the other side of the room.

My question is: What type of cable is suitable for carrying the volume motor current and cancel switch signal? Could I safely wire up a CAT5 network cable? How about two runs of 4-strand telephone cable?

Beldon # 8445 or equivalent, was recommended --STRANDED, 18 gauge wire. Ron Rich

Thanks for the tip. Searching, I found that Belden #8445 is 22AWG; the 18AWG version is product #8465. Almost everyone sells 8445 by the spool at 100', 500' or 1000', which is much more than I need.

I finally found 8465 cable for just 31ยข/foot at Skycraft Parts & Surplus: 5 Conductor 18Awg Cable, Type CMG

Assuming a higher-gauge wire would be okay, I bought 60' and shipped cross-country for just a little over $30!

You're welcome--thanks for correcting the wire size--8445 IS the correct Beldon number-I was going from my great, but not too long memory --you'd think I could remember, not to do that, at my age  ---- Ron Rich

Hi Guys,

I wanted to confirm that the correct MRVC cable is a Belden 18GA Twisted NON shielded.

Hi James,
??? Whatcha doing here ?? A, M-RVC is not the same as a, P-RVC ?? Are you "confirming" a fact, or axking a question ?? ("M" stood for "Master"--"P" stood for "Powered") Ron Rich

I have an MRVC-2.

I need a new POT, a set of plugs, and a cable. What I want to know is what cable to use.

From this thread it is not clear which belden part number one should use. This will be for my Seeburg M100A.

James, it looks as though you need 7 conductors for audio and 1 for remote cancel.

I suggest: Belden 8304 or Equivalent http://www.skycraftsurplus.com/8con22aw ... 000ft.aspx

This is 22Ga. 8 cond+shield. !8 Ga is overkill for audio but a shield is important.

When I was doing a large retro installation in 1998 I ordered 12 -24 ga. 10 in shield and 2 out from Peach State vending. The stock #29-622. No brand name. At the time it was 100 ft @26c/ft or 500@23c/ft. You can expect these have risen but if interested their number is 1800-727-3224.

James, Rob,
The MRVC's require 3 wires, inside a shield, for the VC, plus two outside for the reject function. I am not sure what size the VC wires were, but I would guess 18 ga. will work just fine within a 100 foot run.
( Rob, perhaps you were thinking a "stereo" set-up ?) Ron Rich

Nah, just sloppy reading of the print. I failed to take into account the use of the jumper.

Even great minds f-up sometimes....Imagine how often it happens to the rest of us.....

Hi All,

I could not find a correct 16K and 5K Dual Gang POT. So, I went and got resistors and will place them in Parallel to get the correct values of 16K and 5K on a new 50K Dual Gang POT.

My problem is that the schematic in the repair manual and photos I have dug up on ebay of originals do not agree on the wiring.

Of the six colors I have seen some of the MRVC's with the colors opposite of the book. That would make the POT the opposite direction for lowering the volume.

The POT I have, when looking from the end of the shaft, is 16 and 5 K with the shaft all the way counter-clockwise and about zero ( 3 Ohms) when turned clockwise. This is using the Center and Left solder lug and jumping the center and left lug with the resistor.

The photo I found of an original is opposite.

Any thoughts folks before I start to solder everything up?

Thanks, James

Hi James,
I would put very little stock in any "colors" you see anywhere, in any Seeburg publication--as they seemed to use anything they had, at the time--
I know the drawing on page 8006 of the service manual is correct, as I have used it before, probably dis-regarding colors, with no problem--
