less skipping

by Lister » Thu Dec 22, 2011 5:14 am

A general phono question but ill ask it here because it concerns my jukebox

Is there a way to make it less prone to skipping due to a scratched record?
Ive been told put some small coins on the arm to weight it down.

If not that, anything else?

Ditto to what John wrote--plus NO "coins" or anything else !
Coins go in the coin slot--only !

Before using any record that has 'been around' it is important to wash it thoroughly. Very often it is particles that cause skipping and these can be dissolved and washed away.

Next thing to check is the freedom of the tonearm and if there is any bias inward or out. You didn't mention what make of machine you are using. In general Seeburgs and Rowe 1100 series changers handle problem records well.

The nature of the scratch matters too. If it is spiral these can be impossible to deal with. If radial I have used a jewler's loupe and tiny model exacto knife to cut away the ridges that form from a scratch. it's tedious work and there'll always be a pop or click there but you can often make a disk playable again.

Whatever you do NO coins.

I did a number of shows at a well-known convention-sports-show venue. In the audio control rm was a turntable w/ nickle taped to it. Even though I didn't use the table..that nickle went...
