Seeburg SPS-160 Not Playing Selection 100

by kentmurphy » Sat Mar 12, 2011 10:02 pm

I have a Seeburg SPS-160 which intermittenly does not play selection 100. When it doesn't play the selection, it will extract and begin to spin the record, but there is no audio. Any idea what might be causing this?

Thanks,
Kent

Kent,
Did you look at the record ? Is it spinning or not , when this happens ?

Ron,

I watched my jukebox more closely this evening and what I described above is not correct. It scans to selection 100, never picks up the record, but continues spinning as if it is playing a record. Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks,
Kent

Kent,
No problem--
Look even more closely--where is the"record lift arm" ? Is it attempting to lift beyond (left of) space 100, or is it at space 100? Remove the record and look thru the record rack-- Ron Rich

Ron,

I looked more closely. It does appear that the mech is going too far and the lift arm is unable to raise. Any idea what might be causing this? What confuses me is that it's intermittent. Sometimes it pulls the record and other times it doesn't.

Thanks,
Kent

Kent,
One of two things are causing that---SLIGHTLY mis adjusted TMU, or "dirt" under the TMU at left of the 100 rivet. Wash the TMU with non residue safety solvent--and see if it "cured"---If not, check alignment on the contact block to TMU, and setting of the detent switch---
One other thing--did it fail to pick-up a 200 side selection prior to missing # 100 ? If so, there is another problem !

Ron,

Thanks! I cleaned the TMU with Deoxit and that didn't solve the problem. They were very dirty though. I did not clean the metal contacts which make contact with the TMU. I pulled the carriage out and closely watched the mech while it was scanning and playing. At selection 100, the lift arm is clearly to the left of the record. I did notice this evening that sometimes the mech would skip a 200 selection, but it would play the previous selection after entering a new selection. Missing a 200 selection did not seem to determine whether it played or didn't play selection 100. I hope all of this makes sense.

You stated in your previous post that I should check alignment on the contact block to TMU, and setting of the detent switch. Not sure what this means or how to do it. I have your Seeburg Mechanism Guide book. Would it be in there?

Thanks again,
Kent

Kent,
DeOxIt would not be my first choice as a cleaner for that-leaves a residue !
Look at the 100 rivet itself--is there any "burning" to the left of it ? If not--contact block/TMU alignment, and detent switch alignment checks are in order.
Yes, I covered this subject in the Mech Guide--lightly, as it's covered in detail in the Service Manual---Be sure "contact block adj # 3" is not actuating the switch over prior to the mech scanning past the 100 slot---and that the reversing switch is also correctly adjusted (see my notes in the guide about this).

Ron,

I will look at the service manual. What cleaner would you recommend for the TMU?

Thanks,
Kent

Ok, I found my manual. I want to confirm I am reading the right adjustment procedures. The procedure I believe should be done are listed below. Are they correct?

Tormat Memory Unit Position
Read-out Contact Block 1
Read-out Contact Block 2
Read-out Contact Block 3
Detent Switch - Contact Gap and Pressure Adjustment.

Thanks,
Kent

After fixing the "selection playing lamps not lighting" problem, I noticed when it thinks its playing selection 100 the only lamp lit is the first 2. See the pic below.

Does this provide any insight into the "selection 100" problem?

Thanks,
Kent

Nope--no relationship--if the contact block for the lamps is beyond the 100 slot, the "00" can not be lit, as the contacts are not touching.
If the last selection that it played was a "100", it would/should, show only the 1 in that position.
