I have already serviced a 1961 Zenith 4d20 single ended stereo amp and plan to also service the Cobramatic phono.

I'll be cleaning out all the fossilized grease etc and wonder if anyone can suggest a type of new lubrication.

The small single ended amp is rated around 5wpc and also wonder if a magnetic cartridge and preamp upgrade would/should substantially increase the sound quality or not.

If the upgrade is worth it can you please recommend a lower cost cartridge?

I have no knowledge of what "they" used in the past, nor, what's best today-I just know that at least 99% of the time, if you do not TOTALLY remove ALL of the "old stuff", the new stuff "gunk's-up"---real fast ! Ron Rich

Yup.
I plan a complete tear down and cleanup of the phono.

I got the beat up console last fall and planned to salvage the amp and trash the rest.

But the Cobramatic looks so cosmetically nice that I -have- to save it.

I guess it only played gospel music in church on Sunday.

I'll probably build a new small cabinet.

I use Zoom Spout oil and or sewing machine oil. For greasing I use a quality lithium grease. Be careful though, some spots are meant to be lubricant free to function properly. If you lube them it will mess things up for you.
