storage auction find. . . vqt 40w

by aatgreene » Sun Sep 21, 2014 2:16 am

I bought a storage bin today at a local auction and inside was a RCA VQT 40W Radio Phonograph. I don't no anything about these. There was no electric cord and I didn't see an area where one would go. If anyone knows about these, how they work and how much they are worth the information would be very much appreciated.

Welcome to the board.
If you mean one of these,

http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/rca_radio_ ... alnut.html

That's a "How long is a piece of string?" question.

Contributors over the years have mentioned similarly sized and aged phonographs which they've bought for a few dollars from thrift shops, or even found "free at the kerb," some in working condition.
Anything of that vintage (I don't know that particular model) would likely require considerable work to bring it back to a safe useable condition. You say it has no mains cord. This could mean someone has removed to prevent it being plugged in as it could be in a dangerous condition. The cost of this restoration is likely to be far more than what it is worth. You really need a local technician who can assess the situation. Even they may not be able to tell you what it will cost to get going. In it's present condition, it's unlikely that anyone on here would guess at the value.

We don't really offer valuations on here, as there is no recognised price for mass produced models. It's all about what people are willing to pay.
A trawl through eBay will tell you that the prospective vendors of this age and type of phonograph usually have rather ambitious ideas of their value given the starting price they state, which don't sell.
