Can you help with HMV 101 parts?

by jakub76 » Mon Jul 02, 2007 4:24 pm

I need some bits for a HMV 101 portable gramophone...

- Carry Handle (black)

- 2x internal clips (the clips that hold the crank in place when stored, 2 of mine are broken)

- upper escutcheon (seems to be a curved metal part on the bottome part of the case which I have, and another piece normally attached to the lid, this is the bit I don't have + the 2 screws that hold it in)

Can anyone help me please?

I have seen the handles on ebay but $40 inc. postage seems a bit steep.

Cheers.

Hi. Not quite sure which part you mean here?? Any chance you could post a pic?
The 101 went through a lot of changes during it's production, so it could be something I'm not familiar with. The only bits I can think of that were screwed to the lid itself, were the top half of the lock, the 2 metal brackets that support the record storage flap, and the 2 screw/pins for it to pivot on, as well as the 4 metal corner protectors. The only escutcheon I know of is for the crank handle on the outside of the cabinet base.

I should have at least one of the crank clips here somewhere. I just had a quick look in the shed but couldn't see it- it's 2am, so I'll have a better look in the morning.
You'll probably have to settle for one of the new carry straps I think. Even if you find an original, they won't last too long if you carry it by the handle. Sweaty palms and old age make the leather and stitching pretty frail.

missing piece

Nice, I'd love to find 2 clips so I can continue to bring the thing back to a nice condition. Here is a picture of the missing bit...

I know the bit you're referring to - it's a cover to stop the dust getting into the winding slot when not in use.

Try Ken Priestley in UK - email to ken@fonograf.com

He does all the spares and I'm almost certain will have one on these.

Try Mike Childs ("soundgen" on Ebay) for the carry handle. You don't say which type it is but I'm betting it's the Pakana type and Mike sells these NEW old stock ones! You can't get better than that if you genuinely want to put the machine back to its original state? Otherwise, if not, you could make your own handle to save money. I did that once with the earlier type as no-one sells the latter type to my knowledge?

I don't think $40 is unreasonable to achieve what you want. Otherwise leave as is?
I used to be looking for things but now I've found them I don't look at them!

I was right- I haven't come across that on a 101 before.
Steve- Would that be the earliest version 101? I've had 3 of them, all slightly different, but none with the dust cover.
Jakub: WStill cant find them. I should have 1 or 2 here somewhere, so I'll keep looking and let you know.

Some parts found

by jakub76 » Mon Jul 09, 2007 4:31 am

I have been able to source the clips and the handle. I am still looking for the dust cover (see photo above).
Thanks for everyone's help and advice!
Cheers,
Jakub

Shane - no, the earliest 101 has the front-winding motor as per the Model 100. There are two versions of the "front-winder" and they can be distinguished from each other by the needle tray appearing on the external corner of the case as per this example. The first one had internal needle bowls mounted to the u/s of the lid.

As the one pictured above shows (jakub76's machine), whilst it still has the early carry handle (not Pakana type) it has the later conventional winding slot and "middle period" motor ie it's not a front wound machine. I think the Pakana handle came in around mid-1928 so this is probably a late 27 / early 28 machine?
