They're Coming To Take Me Away, Ha Haaa!

by Dave » Wed Apr 26, 2006 3:03 am

I have a copy of They're coming to take me away......It is recorded forward on one side and backwards on the B side, with matching reverse label. Do I have something worth anything? Have never seen it, in this form. Dave

That how the record came,Dave. Warner Brothers thought it matched the "nuttiness" of the song to have the B side as the same song but backwards and print the label backwards too.

Mine is like that too. The original release records were all that way. Years later, they rereleased it with something else on the back.

It was a big seller in its time so there's plenty of them about still...they're up for sale at a couple of dollars each

Unfortunatly there is very little demand for classical music on records. It would sell for no more than $1.00

I'm trying to figure out how they fit it all on one 45.

Mine is on a 10-inch 33.

Maybe your 45 is one disc out of a multiple set of records.

The 1974 re-release, which I bought as a kid, also has the backwards B-side.
A couple other examples of backwards B-sides include "Yellow Balloon" by The Yellow Balloon (a low-charted hit whic turns up on occasion) and "Yummy Yummy Yummy" by The Ohio Express - in the latter's case, I think they just threw that on to fill a B-side because the A-side wasn't intended to be released in its original form. But, someone thought Joey Levine's demo sounded good, so....

Actually, the flip side of the Ohio Express "Yummy Yummy Yummy" is titled "Zig-Zag" But I reversed it, and it is actually the music tracks of the 1910 Fruitgum Co. Song "Poor Old Mr. Jensen" recorded backwards.

I also have the 1910 Fruitgum Co. single "Indian Giver." It has a reversed flip side "Pow Wow". I reversed it, and had their later hit song "Bring Back Howdy Doody" three years before they released it in forward form, but with a different arrangement.

That's really cool - I never knew about either of these.
I remember hearing one of those little Philco record versions of "Yummy Yummy Yummy" but "Zig Zag" was actually mastered FORWARDS.
Among the non-hit backwards B-sides you'll find is "Angela" by Professor Morrison's Lollipop - no coincidence that this is also a Kasenetz-Katz production.
