Have an ongoing battle with a new Seeburg SMC-2 owner here at work.
He wants to hack into the wiring and circuit board so he can machine operate in free play.
He's too cheap to purchase a user manual.

I found a partial instruction in a Google search that says to place the SMC-2 into free play mode, you hold the credit button and enter 99.

Can any of you SMC-2 owners out there confirm the proper sequence for activating the free ply mode or confirm if the SMC-2 can be free played?

Thanks for any help you can provide. I just want to know so we can put this debate to rest.

You just didn't get the "whole instruction", which tells you to put the slide switch the "service mode" first, then hold the credit switch and type "99" on the keyboard. Phono must be left in "service mode", and the batteries MUST be good.

When he got the SMC-2 home, he discovered it didn't have a coin switch. One of the other guys in the office piped up that he had some coin switches but he needed to consult the manual for a part number so we could see if we had a part for him.

He immediately starts yammering about he is going to use the coin return switch and rig up some kind of wiring and hack into the circuit boards to rig the thing to free play.

When we tried to tell him to consult a manual because we were all pretty certain that these machines could be operated in free play, he just babbled on about how we never had a machine like this and how he never trusts information off the internet and how he would never take the word of any of the local coin op guys because they don't know anything about these old machines.

Which led me to an internet Google search and "Phonoland".

When my buddy and I each forwarded him a message with the missing instructional link, we got no reply. I can't wait to get to work tomorrow and get him spooled up again.

As for your question, I have no idea how he plans to screw up his machine without using a manual but I do have complete faith in him.

I LOVE it--Most happy to hear that you "have faith"---and that it's "complete"--However, that being said, I see a lot of "mis-information" (an honest error, or----??) on the internet--
Hey--tell this clown that there is a "free play" button on the CPA--It's marked "credit" and can be used to give 10 "free plays" at once. He could just run another switch to the outside and use that !
