NSM ES-IV (4) plays 1/2 song if that

by mike11 » Thu Aug 20, 2015 11:25 am

I have an nsm es 4 playing maybe 20-30-40 secs of a song and goes to next track if one is in line or puts cd back....I cleaned the lens very good, cleaned CDs, swapped decoder chip with a new one,..... anything else I can try ??? I read somewhere this is cause the laser looses focus..... any cleaning or adjusting that can be done to buy this player some time if thats the case ??

Thanks

Hi Mike,
You "swapped" which "decoder chip" ? Which model CD player is installed in your phono ?

Mike,
I assume you are calling the program chip, a "decoder chip" ? If so, that's probably not involved in your problem.
Yes the whole playing unit is in a "big black plastic case", but the CD PLAYER is the "unit" that sits in the bottom center, that the disc playing goes to, to play. I assume the problem is with the player. Have you properly cleaned the lens on it ? You need to determine which model it is prior to doing so, as cleaning instructions differ, depending on the model number. Ron Rich

says nsm cd 100 near it on the player housing itself and on player is no markings defining what model it would be unless cd 100 explains it for you ....... AMI boxes i like much more stuff isnt so secretive and they are clear what things are and info is avail ...i can post a pic of the player if that would help let me know if youd like it in or out of the housing

Hi
Does the machine put up an error number on the display possibly 61 error which may mean that the cd player is on its way out, usually happens with burned cd's first and then with originals. Also the cd player motor maybe giving up. The decoder board above the player usually either works or not( but not in a 100 percent of cases). I know its a bit vague but the nsm's will display an error if there are cd player or decoder board problems

That's the first one--a CDM-3. Did you try carefully cleaning the lens, per instructions in the Service Manual ? If that does not help, find the DAC board (brown colored, with un-masked traces) and re-solder --ALL-- header pins and anything else that looks like a "cold solder joint"--Check that there are no plugs "heating up"--if so, replace, or, jump it--these boards were famous for poor soldering. Didja check the plugs for heat--look at the "power" plug, on the ugu-ly board ( a five or six position, grey plug). CAREFULLY, touch it while CD is playing--it MAYbe red-hot ! If hot, that's your problem--if not, either the player, or something on that board is failing, when "hot"---- Ron Rich
