Seeburg 146 volume control

Hey everyone,

I recently inherited a 1946 Seeburg 146M. I am having issues with the volume control. My issue is the volume is too high with the volume control turned all the way down. I change the volume pot, and still no help. The volume pot controls the volume, turns it up and down, but the lowest is still way to loud. The main amp is the MA1-L6. Curious if anyone has any ideas.

ASSUMING you have replaced the Volume Control----
My GUESS would be, either incorrect volume control, or incorrectly wired ? See schematic in the Service Manual--

Hey Ron,

I double checked my wiring of the pot with the schematic and it is correct as well as the wiring from the pot to the 7 pin plug. Any other ideas? Any information I could give to potentially help solve this issue? I replaced the original pot with the one sold on victoryglass.com.

Lance, inability to turn volume all the way down indicates that a ground connection in the volume control circuit is broken.

These machines are a bit outside my interest zone, but the amps are similar in this area to some of the later machines.

There are two pots in the volume control unit. (IIRC) One has two connections and is the bass level. The other with three connections is the actual volume control. The chassis ground connection is the one at the point where the control's arm is in the fully counterclockwise position. Check the connection between that one and the chassis ground especially the volume control plug. Run a jumper for test.

Amp chassis is grounded. Multimeter reads very small amount of ohms. I rewired the pot to the 7 pin plug and still having the same issue. Not sure if this matters but I checked the continuity between the wires where they connect to the pot and the pins. They have continuity with pins they aren't connected to. Like the wiper on the 16,000 ohm pot has continuity with pin 7, which it is goes to, as well as pin 6&1. Pins 6,7&1 all have continuity with everything on the pot except the opposite side of the wiper from the ground on the 16,000 ohm pot.
