RCA Victor Console RK-290

by jjyonkers » Sat Apr 13, 2013 6:43 am

Hi Everyone!! I recently acquired a really unusual RCA Victor Console made out of Mahogany in a French Provencal style. The model is RK-290, but it also says IVF619 on it. It has an RCA Victor turntable and the radio says "Stereo High Fidelity" on it. I'm wondering what year it's from or any other information anybody has about it. It's a very heavy, ornate unit. Thanks!! Julie

Most likely the rare "Hutch" model similar to the 3VF619 - the 1VF was made around 1961-62.
I'm quite familier with them, being an RCA service tech.
Original cost around $600 at the time.
The Provincial hutch was in cherry, not mahogany, that I know of.

Best thing to do to continue enjoying it, is to have it FULLY and COMPLETELY restored to a reliable running condition.
This is MANDATORY for being 50+ years old.
I wouldn't even plug it in, until such work is done first.

I've serviced enough of them, and by now they ALL are in need of such service.
Not restored, they'll cook and burn up tubes and sound lousy, and not being safety fused, they'll fry the impossible-to-find power transformer.

Then, sadly, you're looking at massive repair costs well over what the preventative restoration would be.
The Internet is a marvelous thing, however it's not a good substitute for actually being there.
