Matt,
Aw--the cable cars--
A long, long time ago, when I was in high school, I had a part time job at a dept. store downtown SF. I rode the bus, or street car to the foot of Market/Powell streets, where I then transferred to the Cable Car. This was usually a big PIA, and I wound up walking to my job, many times, as the "tourists", would be "piled up" waiting for the next car, around the turntable.
Once turned around and off the turn table, the conductor allowed all to "rush" for a seat ( he would call out---"All aboard ?"), or standing room on the Cable Car--it was often "pandemonium", and once in awhile, someone got hurt ! They have since changed this to "line" ( now maybe called a "que" ?), so boarding is much more orderly ( Oh, BTW--in those days, only males were allowed to ride "outside", in the open air part, of the Cable Car).---Ron Rich

Here's an interesting ad: http://visalia.craigslist.org/clt/4389176318.html
Yes, Craig's List again!
Selling this juke at $400 is okay, but in the ad it states: "restored value $1500+"!!!!
Has anyone here seen one of these sell for $1,500+?
I have an SS160 just like this, which I was going to sell for $550 when I get around to "restoring" it.
Where do people get their jukebox values from? Is there a secret website somewhere that has all these values listed?
Regards
Keith

Hi Keith,
IMHO, another "-know-nothing, hope-full"--just on Craig's list, not eBay--(but eBay owned !)
If I "restored it", I would need to get at least $1500 for it, even if I got it for nothing, and it was in extra, good shape.
I would replace all "worn", beyond spec parts, such as the display motor, and all mechanical items in the whole phono.
On this model, it's about a 50/50 chance the tone arm will need replacing ( if still Red--100%), and as far as "bass speakers" go--on the SS-160 model, there is NO replacement. These are "unique" to this model, as is their placement within the cabinet. Ron Rich

My SS160 has a "genuine" bullet hole through the back - it must be worth more.

Keith,
I have "removed" bullets from jukes before--One that penetrated the amplifier output transistor--I showed this to the operator, and he said that this was "impossible, as there were no bullet holes in the cabinet--and the amp had never been swapped--" I went to look at the cabinet--took me a long time to figure out what happened--no "hole" was visible, however, I noticed that the door was "sprung" and there was a large "gap" between it, and the cabinet. Upon looking at that gap. I noticed that there were "scrape marks" at one point in both the lid and cabinet--the bullet went "dead center" thru that gap ! Ron Rich

My SS160 came from a restaurant. It was shot in the back, stopping the top display from rotating. I had to hammer the back of the cabinet back into shape so that the display would turn again. Other than a hole and a broken record sleeve holder, no other damage. I wonder if the shooter didn't like the music, or the food?

Keith

Keith,
My "bet", would be neither--it was the "service" that prompted the shooting !

My pick for "Hopeful of the month"--cut/paste, from ePay--(asking for, $1500 minimum- photo shows DS cabinet, minus the DS speakers--AY 160 U, ID tag ?)

MAKE ME AN OFFER!!!

You are looking at a 1962 Seeburg Jukebox model DS-160 with an AY160 tag. You can play 45 rpm's or 7" 33 1/3 little LP's. You are buying the jukebox only if you want it filled with records that would be randomly inserted it will be $50.00 more. Everything does work. It plays quiet it may just need a new amplifier. It is a coin operated jukebox that you would find in a bar or restaurant that is put on free play. It is in really good condition and comes from a smoke free home. I will not ship it must be picked up. Thank you for looking and good luck

Some people just do not have sparkling selling skills, or proper punctuation ability.
And, I wouldn't expect everyone to.

What amuses me is how few of the facilities available to vendors, provided by eBay, are used by some hopefuls. Many are pretty useless at describing their item or showing it to its best ability. (I know there are some "dodgy" photos used sometimes, particularly with jukebox stuff to "hide" bad chrome), but often, it's just poor photography and lack of information.
Many don't know how to "sell" stuff.

I remember some ten years ago the R&A banned a lot of models of golf drivers as the reflex action of face of the head, to use a non technical technical term, was too "springy." So if you had one and like me you could have had it for a few years, you couldn't use it in any competition any more, so we all had to get new ones. No pro, or golf shop would give you more than a few quid for them, yet you had to pay mega bucks for a new legal one.
It was all a nonsense really, as few golf club members play off scratch and any advantage it gave them so they did well in club competitions, would have meant their handicap would have come down, so they'd be back at square one.

So I put mine on eBay and advertised it as, "The golf club that hits the ball so far, the R & A have banned it!"
This was perfectly true.
I actually got more than half what I'd paid for it. It would have been fine for any purchaser who just played golf, wasn't a member of a club and thus had no handicap and therefore didn't enter any competitions. The guy who bought it was well happy.

There's being "hopeful" and then there's being totally delusional.

I know Alan who has produced this jukebox to a very high standard.
I have repaired all of the boards and serviced the mechanism for him.

Alan has spent a fortune on the cabinet with regards to the graphics, this jukebox was orginally a 1978 Rowe Ami R-82 Woodhue. The price of the jukebox reflects on the work done to it. A number of other Two Tone style jukeboxes have sold well in the market.

Alan

Each to their own, Alan, but I'd never contemplate spending that sort of money for a machine without a visible mechanism.

In my opinion, the decoration represents "more style than substance." But good luck to them if they think someone will buy it at that price.

As has been said on here, spending a lot of time and money on renovating any sort of apparatus, doesn't mean you are likely to recoup the outlay and make a reasonable profit on top of it.
