1st post - GE console phonograph

by Radiotvnut » Tue Feb 01, 2011 8:37 pm

This is my first post here, after recently discovering this site. I have been active in the collection of repair of vintage radio's, record player's, and TV's for over 20 years (I officially started collecting at the age of 12).

With that said, I thought I'd share my latest find, a circa 1960 GE tube type console phonograph. I need another console like I need a hole in the head; but, the local flea market had three consoles that had been sitting there for ages with a starting price of $75. A few months ago, the owner begged me to take them for $35/ each. The other Saturday, he told me to name my price because he needed them gone. I offered him $10/each and he jumped on it. I'll post about the other two later.

This console has the usual VM changer w/ Sonotone cartridge and the amp is a single ended 6BQ5 based stereo unit driving 12" woofers. I have not attempted to power this up since it has some nasty looking capacitors in the amp that are probably bad and I don't want to take the risk of causing further damage. I suspect that after this is properly serviced, it will be a nice sounding unit.

Hey, I'm new here and reviving an old post because I have had the same GE Console that you show in your pic. Did you ever get it refurbed?
I may have to do the same. Thx.
