Removing old needle from Astatic QT type cartridge..

by tmp58 » Mon Apr 22, 2013 3:22 pm

Hello phonoland readers! I am currently working on a rare 78RPM Seeburg"M" 3 - scissors type record changer from 1946-7 era from a Stromberg-Carlson fancey radio phono combo. The Astatic QT type cartridge is still alive with decent volume. While I was redoing the record changer for lubrications, I accidently broke off the bottom "L" part of the needle but the stem shaft stayed in place. Ho do I remove this whole needle without destroying the otherwise good cartridge? I know there is a needle replacement for this according to the Astatic needle chart I have. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks Much!

I suspect, if it's like the Astatic used in jukeboxes, you just pull it out--like a bee's stinger --

Do not use that changer to change records made between 1939 and 1947 inclusive. They were made of substitute materials due to the war, and will break if stacked on knife-type changers. This is the main reason the push type changer replaced the knife type changer.
