Hello, I am new to your group and to record collecting. I started collecting records to help me deal with the pain from my injuries. I love all types of music, currently I am limiting my collecting to 78's prior to 1960. It does not matter what type of music even speeches would great! If you have records that you would like to get rid of please contact me.

I do not have any money to spend so if you want to sell me something I am sorry but you will need to try somebody else. I am waiting for the VA and the government to approve my disability claims and to start payments. This process may take another year before I see a livable income.

Hey I don't suppose that there are any rich congressmen or senators out there who would like to send me some of their kick backs LOL.

Welcome to Phonoland. It sounds like you're relatively new to 78 record collecting. I say this because you said, " currently I am limiting my collecting to 78's prior to 1960." That would actually encompass (virtually) all 78s ever produced.

With the exception of those manufactured for parts of the world where electricity was still not available at the time, such as India, parts of Africa, etc.--SEE: Beatles at 78 RPM -- http://www.cool78s.com/ -- the 78 format had pretty well run its course by the mid-to-late 1950s. In the US, UK and European markets, all of the major and minor record producers had switched to 45 rpm and LPs by that time.

While I don't have any 78s to give away at this time, I wanted to pass this link along to you for your reference. It provides a good dating guide for 78s, and includes all of the major and most of the minor (US) manufacturers -- http://settlet.fateback.com/

BTW, One place you might want to check, from time to time, for free records is Craigslist -- http://www.craigslist.org

Rather than search the hundreds of individual forums, you can do an across the board search of the site by going to http://www.google.com and typing in the following. (This is a case sensitive search.)

site:craigslist.org free 78s OR 78-rpm records

This will call up any craigslist listings containing those words.

Along this line, you can also post a (free) wanted ad on your local Craigslist board.

And, if your local VETS office has a bulletin board, be sure to post a wanted message there. There are still a number of WWII and Korean War vets around who possibly have stacks of old records in their cellars or attics that their kids/grandchildren don't want.

Thank you for the links that you left for me.

I am also looking for local record and phonograph collectors of which I have had very little response from several post that I have left on the internet. Surprising that in an area that Mr. Edison called his winter home I can't find nobody that collects any of his records.

I currently have an Edison S-19 that I am trying to reassemble and locate a cabinet for this as well.
I have about 15 Edison records (about 12 are playable). so once I have this completed I will have something to play.

I know that the last 78's were massed produced into the late 1950's. I have about 160 78's records almost all are playable but some are in very poor condition. I spent some spare cash on a couple of lots on ebay which gave me some nice band music but most were in G- or worse condition.

I will be happy once all this red tape is over between me and the VA and the Government I must admit it is scary not knowing how I am going to pay the electric bill each month but so far we are doing ok. I just need to hold out until I get the VA disability approved and the checks coming in, hopefully it won't be long.

I want to add that I've been looking at the web pages and your group for a couple of weeks and I really like what I've seen this is why I have decided to join. Phonoland really has some very good people here and it impressed me so much that I want to be a part of it.

If you are using an acoustic player, use records made before 1932. The later ones wear out very quickly, because they are made of softer materials. Note that World War II era records are made of substandard materials, and should be played with modern equipment that can play 78 records.

I also have a pile of about 1,000 78's which I want to get rid of and have been working my way through them slinging out lots of them. I am also in the UK - perhaps we should swop our piles of unwanted 78's to see if there is anything the other would like. If your interested send me a PM.

Hit the thrift stores, too. One place where I used to regularly shop would have record sales. Ten cents per record. I got alot of beautiful boxed sets of Classical music that way, almost all in mint condition. Seems like grandma/grandpa donated their old console and entire record collection to the store. I got a boxed set of 10 LP's for one dollar. --BB
