Sound while spinning. Is this somewhat normal or should it sound
Smoother? Thanks, raven

Look at the "tracks" that the write in carriage has made (where they "slide) around the drum. If there is black "stuff" there, do not clean it off, but use a thin coat of # 20 wt ND oil to wet them. If it has been removed, they originally had graphite grease there--that's what the "black stuff" was--
Also, you may spray a lite coat of DeOxIt onto the contact disc (and on the read-out contact disk too). Ron Rich

Thanks Ron. There are 2 slightly gunky, greasy, lines
On either side of the selector pins. Is this what your speaking of?
Those have been cleaned, oops. I've put a few drops of oil
Around, problem persists. How hard is it to lubricate the
Write in motor itself? Thanks for reply, raven

You have cleaned off the "patina" ( I'm always looking for excuses to use that word)--Yep that goop belongs on those tracks--Did you use DeOxIt on the wiper fingers ? I have never heard a motor "screech" on those, but have seen them so dry that they won't move. Oiling is no real problem--just use SAE # 20 ND oil, or they will "gum up". Do NOT dis-assemble that motor !! Ron Rich

Ron,
I narrowed down sound to motor area. Took your advice
And didn't try to disassemble it, although I did drop it down to look at it.
Spinning the toothed wheel on it would recreate same sound when held
In certain positions. The little round spinning magnet?, was the culprit.
I put a couple drops of 3in1 oil, spun it good, reinstalled it
Smooth as silk! Will this gunk up motor in future?
Appreciate your help, raven

Wrong (bad !) oil, IMHO !! You can use "3 IN One SAE 20wt. motor oil"--- Ron Rich

IMHO= In My Humble Opinion--Yes, IMHO, I would use a "safety solvent" to clean out any old "stuff" and re-oil as needed with 20 wt-- Ron Rich

Thanks Ron. I did use 3 in one oil, just the regular stuff in
The little can. Is this not the 20wt kind you're speaking of?
Appreciate the advise. Raven...... Edit!...just looked it up and
Realize the difference! Will reclean and use the correct 20wt
Motor oil!! Thanks, raven
