Is Seeburg Stepper Required For WOM

by ds100h » Sat Dec 08, 2012 9:51 pm

I asked a seller on eBay if his 201 had an Auto Speed Unit and a Stepper in it. This is his reply"

"this unit works on 45 only to the best of my knowledge you don,t need a stepper unit for a wallbox on any 50s Seeburg, look the price on this box, is lower then some unrestored seeburg jukes, that are on ebay now. yes it comes with 45s,and matching title strips
- rockolaski"

I am not sure about the ASU, but, I thought all Seeburg JukeBoxes required a stepper to be able to hook a WOM up to the JukeBox?

Is it safe to hook a WOM up to a Seeburg 201 stepper?

I know Ron will know this one easily.

Darrell, and all,
A stepper is required to operate a wallbox on all Seeburgs, up to the "Microlog" models (LS-3-up).
Up to the K/L models, it was "standard". Starting with those models ("Remote Control Stepper Unit "-RCSU-1) it was "optional" (at an extra cost).
The (33 rpm) autospeed came out as an option for the "Q" models. (See "caution note" in "Q" and "Y" service manuals prior to installing it !!) It became "standard" in the AYxxxU models, and became a 45 rpm unit starting with the LPC models. Ron Rich

Thanks Ron. Is it safe to hook a WOM up to a Seeburg 201?

Hi Darrell,
It's "safe" to hook up a WOM to any Seeburg--so long as the fuse size has not been "increased"--
I think your question comes from me mentioning that the K/L steppers tended to give problems, that none of the others did, and that I don't like hooking to them--Ron Rich

Ron

You are correct. As I understand your reply the KS/KD steppers are the only ones to avoid. Is there any work around, such as replacing the KS stepper with ???? I have the 3WA-200 that yourself & Rob assisted me to get in playing shape. I would very much like to hook a WOM up to the KS, but, will not risk messing the KS200 up unless I can do it safely.

Thank you
Darrell

Darrell, the stepper in the K-L is Ok for home use if you clean the contacts and the capacitor is good. From what i recall, the only real issue was that the write-in pulse for the keyboard would fail if the if the contacts on the "home" position of the stepper didn't make.

There is a retrofit that Seeburg offered that replaced the whole stepper matrix board with a later type Guardian stepper (i have one) but it also required replacing the edge connectors with the same large Jones plugs that had been previously (and later) used.

When I modded a K for commercial service I set it up to use the later backdoor and this involved replacing those plugs as well as enlarging the hole in the mech shelf to clear the "new" Tormat plug.

I would rather have used a 201 for this location, but I had a K -so that is what I used.

I've owned 3 L's, two of which had original backdoors and when properly rebuilt they were fine.

For the home, just use what is there.
