Lubricating the record transfer assembly of an AMI E-80?

by davehanes » Tue Oct 28, 2014 6:37 am

Hi, it's been a while since I've worked on my AMI E-80, but I started work on it again. The record transfer assembly was badly seized up, even taking the whole transfer housing out of the jukebox, it was difficult to disassemble it all. Anyway, it's all apart now, and all of the old gunk and grease is cleaned up.

My question is on re-assembling it, and what lubrication to use (if any). The service manual talks about using "Dow-Corning DC-44 fluid type silicone grease", and lubricating:
idler sprocket, toggle pins, toggle camplate bearing, all mating gear surfaces on the transfer assembly, 3 slots in the mushroom cam, 2 slots in the hub of the gripper bow, 2 engaging surfaces between the transfer cam and tone arm cam plate, top end of the tone arm pivot shaft also the area near the bottom where the brass guide on the tone arm bracket moves up and down, and the 2 tone arm cone pivots.

It also says that the bearing surfaces withing the transfer assembly have been adequately lubricated with silicon grease, although I have disassembled this and removed all lubrication.

So, my question is, should I lubricate all of the points the AMI manual talks about? If so, what modern lubricant(s) should I use?

Thanks for any assistance!

Dave,
IMHO--Either way--use what they say, or a SMALL amount of CRC Stay-LubeMoly Coat graphite grease.

I gotta tell ya, the best grease I've used to prevent friction and wear on sliding/rotating mechanical assemblies is Super Lube with Teflon. (PTFE)
Widely available, it's light, clear, and sticks where its put.
Also sheds dust, is waterproof, and super slippery.

I've used it on VCR's in the shop, record changers, and gearboxes of power tools.
Great stuff.

The Internet is a marvelous thing, however it's not a good substitute for actually being there.

Thanks for the info! I hadn't realized that Dow Corning still made DC-44... I see it comes in a medium and a light variety. I'm going to order the light version and see what that looks like.

That "Super Lube Teflon" grease looks good too, I may pick up both and see what consistency I like best.

Thanks again!

Yes indeed. Dow Corning 44 has been in production for 60 years and still being made.

Lots of 16mm film projectors (especially Eiki brand) use Dow Corning 44 to lubricate the gear train and intermittent movement ("cam tank" ) assembly.
