help with silvertone stereo phonograph cabinet

by emma26 » Sat Nov 05, 2011 4:56 pm

good morning all :] i recently purchased a silvertone stereo phonograph cabinet from a thrift store. the peice was in great shape so i could not resist. i have a large collection of records and my old record player was broken in my recent move.

anyways, the stereo works just fine, however when i try to play records they do not play through the speakers, i can hear the record playing, it just doesnt work through the speakers.

i am desperate to fix it on this lovely sunny fall afternoon, so i can drink coffee and listen to recently purchased records.

any suggestions /help would be greatly appreciated!!
thanks all

Emma,
Not knowing the machine, I would approach it as follows:
Look at the needle--especially if the tone arm was not properly secured for transport--
Check that there is in fact a "needle", and that it is properly positioned (between the "forks").
Find the "function switch", and be sure it is in the "phono" position--if a "rotary" type switch, spin it several times, rapidly, or if a "push" type switch, "push/un-push" it several times, as it is possibly just "dirty".
If all the above fails, I would look at the cartridge wiring--all the way back to the amplifier section for un-plugged, plugs, or broken wires.
Hope that helps ! Ron Rich

What's the model number of your set. When you "hear the record playing just not thru speakers" there's a number of possibilities. But since you checked all that it's probably the cartridge.

The model number x-ref to a Truetone, Western Auto item dating to 1972. The cartridge, It's where the needle is inserted. Get the number off it and get one and see if that works. If not Sorry, I have no idea what to tell you to do next. I don't have data on sets from 1972. Maybe someone else can help, perhaps your local electronics techs in audio shops.

Miss Emma,

When you say "what's a cartridge?", that's pretty scary. Don't go poking and proding around, possibly making things worse. If you have no inclination of being mechanically inclined or knowledgeable about electronics, get it to a good tech and get it properly serviced.

The needle snaps into the cartridge which is attached to the tonearm. Take some time and go through some of the older posts...you may learn quite a bit about your unit and what makes these old relics tick. --BB

I just aquired an old electrophonic console (tiny) with the usual BSR turntable. Before I was finally able to remove the platter, the wires that connect to the tone arm were severed, like someone pulled on it. Those thin wires were snapped with remains on the rca contacts underneath the turntable. Possiblility?
