Rowe Ami r86

by reddevilrobbo » Sun Nov 23, 2014 9:23 pm

Newbie here and new to jukeboxes .My father in  law has recently aquired Rowe Ami r86 which had various problems.

We sent the CCC, the whole carousel inc mech control, pricing board and PSU all away for repair. I went and collected these repaird parts today and prior to bringing them home i saw them all working and happily playing a record in a donor jukebox.
Anyway i got them home, installed them back in our jukebox correctly  (took photos prdviously to make sure), double checked everything then switched it on and the carousel  did not rotate, as it should?

Then smoke started coming out of the PSU so immediately  switched it off. Had a look at the circuit board in the PSU and at least 1 or 2 diode/resistors are burnt out, but why?
What can be doing this? The amp has also been checked and thats ok as is the psu for the lighting so now we are stumped/stuck and at our wits end. What can it be? I have a service manual but there is no wiring diagram for PSU.
Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated
Paul

Hello Paul,

Welcome to the forum.

I see you are from the UK and I think I have spoken to you.
If I remember correctly you sent the boards to a electronics company rather than a Jukebox expert.

If you still wish to send me your boards and now your PSU. I will look at it favourable for you.

There must be a major short on one of the power rails for it to take out the power supply, no doubt it will be the 28 volts DC or the 8 volt DC that is effected.

Regards
Alan

Hi Alan,

Yes we have had contact via a few emails a good few weeks ago now.

We did send them to an electronics company originally but have since purchased a CCC, pricing board, mech control and psu from a locally sourced jukebox specialist. i saw all the parts working altogether along with our carousel in a donor box and it sounded great. All we did was remove them, transport them home and fit in our box.

So its obviously something in our box. All looms have been checked and are ok. We did find a spade connection off its connector in the back of the service switch and we are hoping that was it. It was jammed against the other wiring in the switch which we are hoping caused the short and sucked the life out of the blown diodes.

We are having it repaired by the same said specialis . Yes its affdctedghe 8vdc side of things.

Hope that makes sense lol
Cheers again for your input Alan.

Paul

An update,

It seems that we have a dodgy on-service-off switch as with bit of fiddling the box will work and now play a record. It sounds excellent.

So where can i buy a replacement switch?

We have worked out its a 4 pole 3 position slide switch but these seem to be rare in the UK.

Can i use a 4 pole 3 pisition rotary switch?

Any answers apprdciated,

Paul

Hi Paul,
We have a product here(US) that I have had good luck in cleaning those switches with--don't know if available there, but it's called Deoxit 5. If you can get it, I think it will work for you. If not, see if you can find a good "contact cleaner"--. Ron Rich

Hi Ron,

Many thanks for the reply.

We have just finished cleaning all contacts within the switch, as you suggested and still the same. A couple of the spade connections are very very loose compared to others within the switch so we suspect they are the issue we are having.

Ideally we want to change the switch completely now but a like for like one but i am struggling to source one in the UK. Found them in the USA though so will be ordering from there i think.

Unless anyone knows of a supplier in the UK or if a rotary switch will work or even a toggle switch?

Regards again

Paul

Paul,
If the connectors are loose, that alone will cause the problem(s) you describe--Just SLIGHTLY squeeze them--
And a word of warning on those switches--if "old stock", expect a "new switch" to operate no better then what you have !
