Buzzing sound after pressing selection buttons on Wurlitzer 2150

by COASTERS1969 » Wed Apr 06, 2016 11:47 pm

Hey - Has anyone experienced a buzzing sound when pressing the select buttons? It does it for about 5 seconds then stops and the buttons return to their originial positions. What could be causing it? I'm a rookie here on this. Thanks!

If truly 5 seconds, that's slightly long--2-3 second "biz-zit" sound at that point, is typical WurliTzer ! Ron Roch

Is there a way to correct the buzz? Thanks Ron! Sometimes it is short as 1-2 seconds. It blows a 8/10 amp slo-blo fuse almost every time. Bob C.

Hi Bob,
Well, it stops every time it blows the fuse, don't it ?? What more coodya want ??
This is somewhat hard to track down--could be a weak 24 VDC power supply, but most likely is a poor switch/and,or, relay contact ( dirty/pitted /burned). If, when, I run across something like this, I clean/burnish/ adjust, ALL contacts ( See above post on "how to clean contacts") . Ron Rich

Put in a big honking fuse...that'll take care of it?

My 2150 does this but, as Ron notes, it's usually pretty short. Being more familiar with pinballs, I recognize the noise as the characteristic coil lock buzz. When you start to make a selection pressing the first button causes the coil to lock on until the selection is completed (meaning that the both number and letter are selected and the corresponding coils have fired on the changer mechanism itself). So, I will get the buzz for the length of time it takes for the selection to be made (defined as the pin to popup not the time for the carousel to rotate to the pin and go through its paces). If that is the sound, there really isn't a lot to be done other than to try to clean all the switches and connections to keep the voltage flow optimal.

As for blowing a fuse, I've never had that happen. However, as Ron notes, check the connection and make sure that the movement of the coil doesn't move a wire, triggering a short. You may also want to confirm the right cols are being used. If someone replaced with the wrong 'size' it can cause over-heating, melting wires, fuse failures, etc
