HMV re-entrant 202 help needed (Repair Advice)

Hi guys,I have a hmv 202 gramophone in perfect condition.Completely original and also with the original bill of sale...The motor has hardened it's winding in the oil so would need a service.....Two questions..1,how much do I need to insure it for that reason alone and 2,can anybody recommend a service somewhere in London or the south east to service the motor unit..

We have a few UK based members, but they don't seem to check in very often. They'd probably be the best ones to advise you about the insurance value of your gramophone.

hello Andy , 202 s are very valuable , they currently sell in auction for around £5000 at their peak they were selling for £15,000 , much more than the equivalent credenza would fetch I think .

We have a stall in Portobello Road every Saturday and can offer advice on the motor to you or overhaul it for you , is it the 4 spring 34 motor or the oil bath motor ?

I also have a complete working and near perfect 202. It is insured for £7500 which is a reasonable assessment of current "market value" bearing in mind that a 202 hasn't appeared at auction for quite a long time - not publicly anyway ie. advertised nationally etc.

If a dealer had one for sale he/she would probably ask anything between £5,500 and £7,500 depending on condition. The only two I've seen for sale on eBay have both made at least £5,000, with one making over £6,500. eBay is not a reliable indicator by any means. A dealer paid over £7,000 for one recently.

Having said all that, you have a 203 and not a 202 although I can't imagine that'll make much difference to the price. The addition of the oil-bath motor adds quite a bit of interest to these giant beasts. I'd expect the 1930 versions with this and the slightly elongated horn and twin lid-stays to make a difference to the value by as much as £1000-1500. The oil-bath is a wonderfully (over)engineered example of British manufacturing from this period and unusually is not a Victor import like its earlier No. 34 brethren.

I hope this was a genuine inquiry. I've seen a lot of first time posters on these phonographic related fora who ask questions about value and then disappear never to be heard from again. If someone is selling something and has no interest in it whatsoever and therefore wants an opinion from others who are interested with a view to asking a fair price for a private sale, I wish people would just be more open, honest and say so. I'm not saying the OP is one of those or anything but I note that although Joe_DS and Soundgen responded immediately to the question, after the passing of a month there has been no follow up posts from the originator of this thread. Please prove me wrong!

Indeed I agree with you, Ron.

What strikes me as being a little strange though is the fact that I get emails whenever any topic I have responded to gets a new post or is updated. Whether this is a default setting or something I set up ages ago I can't honestly remember. Given this fact together with the request for help and advice, you'd expect there to be a response more or less straightaway from an originator of a thread, as they presumably will also know when someone has answered them.
