Magnavox Model No Question

by BeeGee56 » Thu Nov 29, 2012 11:40 pm

Hi folks. New member here checking in.

I'm freshening up a late-60's or early-70's vintage Magnavox Astro Sonic console for a friend and I'd like to say first off I've really gotten a lot of help and inspiration from this and a couple of other forums. Thanks!

I'm curious about the specs and manufacturing date of this particular unit and haven't been able to discover much on line. It's a model 1P3675, with the number 114448 ink-stamped on the chassis, and '822271 DE' on a paper label on the RF section shield box.

It appeared to have been re-capped at some point in its life so I was somewhat bolder than I probably should have been about firing it up. It had major switch issues - possibly from spending its working life in a smoking household - that responded well to contact cleaner. The speaker wiring and spade lugs seem dodgy so I'll probably rewire the speakers.

Other than that, it looks like the only thing it's going to need is some work reattaching the grille cloth and then it's on to the record changer.

It sounds better than any computer speakers you could buy for price these are reported to go for, and there's even room in the cabinet for a laptop full of mp3s ;)

Cheers,
BG

Thanks Alan.
I spend most of the day with digital electronics, so having something more traditional to work on is a welcome relief.
