I wouldn't be surprised if the Track release was a re-release from the Atlantic pressing and I agree with your theory about the distribution rights. The same thing happened with The Who's "Join Together" - it was released in 1971 on the (U.S.) Decca label then reissued in '72 on Track with the same catalogue number as the Decca; I finally scored a copy of this tougher "reissue", again thinking it was the original release. Don't know what Shel was doing with that label here in the States, if he thought it was going to be "bigger" than the main label or something...yeah, it's a head-scratcher. And I've seen the Thunderclap Newman variation - guess that came out before the logo design was finalized.
