Seeburg DS160 - Scan Problem

by gmendo » Mon May 23, 2016 5:51 pm

Hi, i am having a scan problem with the mech on my Seeburg DS160. It runs smooth, then scans slow, then smooth again.
Kind of hard to explain so i recorded a short video and posted it on youtube.
Here is the link: https://youtu.be/SZp9Ove5xBk

Thanks for any help you may provide to determine what the problem is.

Gary

Hi Gary,
Easy---hear that "clicking", or,"clanking", sound--that the clutch member being torn up. This is usually caused by lack of proper lubrication.
IF this has not gone on for too long, proper oiling and a very slight adjustment of clutch # 1. (down a hair)--- no more then two thousandths of an inch clearance, where the manual says "just touching") MAY stop this. If that does not work, replacement of the clutch member will be necessary. I also noticed that the detent/trip coil is missing on that phono ?? Be sure to install only the correct version of that coil !
If you do not have it, and want to change the clutch member yourself, I suggest you purchase a "Service Manual PACKAGE" from one of the suppliers listed above, and I would humbly suggest that my "Seeburg Mechanism Guide", would be of some help in this endeavor. (PM me if you wish to purchase it) Ron Rich

Thank you Ron !
I did remove the clutch - cleaned and lubed it - guess i may have missed lube in some spots. Now that i think of it, it only happens after it trips, puts the record back, and goes into scan mode (only left direction though). I'll check it out tonight, re-lube and adjust.
Thanks again for your help with this !!

Gary, it is a worn clutch member. As Ron suggested you may be able to tweak the Clutch $ adjustment -but it probably won't help.

On models Q-AY-Ds and LPC the combination of fast scan-shifting, typical lack of lubrication and that two-ton mech covers causes these models to put more wear on the clutch member's lower notches. Look at the inner "V" of the notches. You'll probably see some rounding where the roll pins enter. If so, you have two choices; replace the member or try filing the the notches so that the lower edges are more squared-off again.

Make note of the position of washers that you remove as well as the top vs bottom of the member.

Hi Ron, I sent you a PM earlier but the message is sitting in my "outbox", not sure what the problem is.

As a test i sent myself a message and it does send the message and it is in the "sent" box.

Hi Gary,
Got it and responded--
FYI--"outgoing PM's" will sit in your "outbox" until the addressee opens them, at which point it transfers to the "sent" box. This confirms the message was, opened, at least----if not read. Ron Rich

And yet another problem with this DS160. I finally got everything adjusted, mech runs smooth in both directions. The problem i am having now is that when you select song "only" one side is playing. To clarify, all of only one side is playing (B1, D1, F1 .... V8).
None of the other side (A1, C1 ...U8) play when selected - mech scans back and forth twice and thats it - any suggestions on what to look for ?

Thanks Ron - i do have the manual - i took a quick look at these connections before posting this and didnt see anything disconnected. I did have to make many adjustments - left side -reversing switch, mech stop and magazine alignment - was beginning to wonder if these had anything to do with this problem.
I'll spend some time again tomorrow am and look at the TMU pins and their connections - Thanks

Garry,
If you "made adjustments"-yes--that pin is powered thru the reversing switch. Also--TMU Miss-alignment can cause this., The pin must have silver on top and be flat, to semi rounded, on top-- Have fun ! Ron Rich

Found the problem - two wires on the TMU pins appeared to be connected but were not. Re-soldered and working great now !
Thanks Again !

Hi Again - have another question - I have a Rock-Ola Rhapsody 408 that i recently parted out - the amplifier was working prior to the part out.
Took both the amp and power distribution module and am trying to getting it working on my work bench - connected to my Seeburg DS.
(connected a test speaker to "Machine Speakers" on amp and connected audio connections from the DS to amp audio inputs)

I took the amp #36855A and plugged it into the Power Distribution Module #38405 - amp tubes light up. Currently getting no sound.
Any thoughts on how i can get this amp working ?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide !
