Unit has a new modern stylus and works OK. Noticed that the 1st record seems a bit slow. Perks up up after that. Anyone have a fix for this and what would be suggested to maintain and how often?

You must mean the 45J, not j45.

The "sluggish motors-when-cold" are common with those models.
This is due to old gummed-up oil lodged in the sintered bearings.
The only real cure is to eraticate the old oil by heat and solvent, then saturating with ZS turbine oil.

This goes for any old motor with sintered bearings.
The Internet is a marvelous thing, however it's not a good substitute for actually being there.
