Can someone explain how the group magnets works? Is it just to save the number of wires? The plates with all the fingers seems like it serves no purpose other than to ground the coils. Seems like it could have been done a lot easier than that. I must be missing something.

Eddie,
You got-it--there would need to be many more wires without the group magnet matrix--

Seems as though a simple relay would have worked just as well. I have to be missing something.

Hi Eddie,
The group magnet, and the grounding plates, make up a "relay" that has 20 contacts on it. Without using this arrangement, each coil would need to be wired back to the keyboard, twice, and the keyboard would need to be more complicated to serve each coil individually.
