Rockola model 408 upper speaker access problem

by David R » Tue Jun 02, 2015 4:17 am

I purchased a Rockola model 408 a couple of weeks ago. I've been able to replace the basket belt and other items in the main case but am stumped on how to open the upper speaker box. There is a screw under one side of the unit that can be turned left or right for a couple of turns but the box is still locked. Is there a different access point or could the latch (if it is activated by the screw) jammed? The lights are OK at the moment, but I would like to get in and clean the area.

Also the machine periodically will play a selection we don't pick. They are at random and at odd times - any suggestions?

Thanks for any help

David: the screw you mentioned is the potentiometer the increases the volume of the upper speaker in relation to the base speakers in the bottom. the release is under the title board, between the amp and power supply. it looks like a vertical rod with a spring on it. push up while swinging out the bottom of the panel. it is hinged at the top. It should be the same as the 418 I have. if you have not obtained a manual, you should get one soon. Mark

Oops, the random problem needs to be addressed by cleaning and burnishing, Everything, relays contacts, and especially the wipers on both the write in and read out side of the pin bank. Mark

Hi
Are the pins on the read out side being canceled after selection?
For the write in selection it is possible that two pins are being selected during an individual selection, there is an adjustment in the manual re this

Mark,
I dis-agree with you on burnishing the "wipers". These are "self-burnishing" --If one or more of the contacts is pitted, it needs to be replaced.-- and NEVER use anything stronger then "safety solvent" on the slip rings--I find Deoxit-5 works real well here--Ron Rich

Many thanks for the info. I ordered a downloadable service manual & parts list earlier. I was sent one for a model 404. I have received a
reordered 408 manual now. It seems to be incomplete as far as the upper speaker info but now I know. I will work on cleaning the contacts with the safety fluid suggested.
Another item popped up: I have a low buzzing that eminates from the keyboard solenoid 35298. I'm going to see if I can find a replacement.
By the way, I'm sure you already know but the diagram of the record basket has the belt located in the wrong location. I at least figured that out without the manual
tnx again
