Magnavox AstroSonic Power Supply?

by Jakelawrence » Sun Apr 24, 2016 7:30 pm

I was recently given a Magnavox Astro Sonic console and met the donation with a great deal of excitement and anticipation.

2 months and about $150 later I'm losing hope and becoming increasingly more and more frustrated. The majority of the issues I've run into have been able to be solved via Google. Unfortuantely, I haven't been able to solve most recent issue. I've started reassembling my console and just noticed that there is no power cord. The only thing I can find that seems to be where a power supply would go is the female ac outlet on the back of the console, but I haven't been able to find a cord online.

Is there more to this than just a male to make power cord? That seems awfully dangerous and leads me to believe there is probably more than meets the eye involved in getting power to this console.

Any help is greatly appreciated, as I've hit a wall on this restoration project that I've almost to the point of giving up on.

No, that receptacle is provided for an accessory tape deck (an option) along with tape in/out RCA jacks on the chassis.
The power cord on Astrosonics is usually permanently attached to the radio/amp chassis.
However, I'm speculating here because you haven't provided enough information (chassis numbers, etc)
If the cord was CUT off previously, it was likely because the unit was faulty or smoked, and people cut the cords off to eliminate it being plugged in again.
If that is the case, I would strongly recommend that it be checked out and serviced before any use.

Thanks for the reply, Matt. My console model 1p3722. The guy that gave it to me did say that he cut the cords, but that it worked fine before he did so. He planned on throwing it away until I expressed interest in it.

Here's two pictures of the radio/amp chassis. Any ideas where the power cord may have come from originally?

He didn't remember which cords he had cut, or where they were when I asked last week.

These two brown cords are the only two that I see in the console itself that have been cut.

Those two brown stubs are the remainder of whats left of the original AC power cord.

Ok, but the brown one that is attached and one of the brown ones that were cut are running down to the tape deck power supply. Theoretically can't I just cut that cord and put a new male ac adapter on it and run power to the console that way?

I cannot determine "what is what" from small blurry photos across the internet.
The Magnavox service schematic for "that" chassis (still unknown) would be required to properly repair this mess.
This is why "wire chopping" by people makes it frustrating.
Put it on my service bench, then I'll know what's what.

I assume you're nowhere near Savannah, GA. I haven't had any luck finding anyone near me that works on them.

Assuming correct, if you look at my name/info on the left of the screen.

Jake, the function switch on the receiver also controls the AC to things such as the turntable and any outlets designed for auxiliary devices such as tape decks.

I agree w/Matt's opinion that the two brown wires are the remnants of the power cord.

What I suggest it to connect an AC cord to those two stubs and place an lightbulb of approx 25 watts in series with that cord. Connect the speakers but not the turntable. Plug it in and turn it to the radio function . the bulb should blink briefly and dim to almost nothing. Try the radio and see if you have sound. If so, leave it on for a while with the volume control at a low, but audible setting.

If all goes well (no smoke or excessive heating of the amp heatsinks or hum) it should be safe to plug it directly in w/out the bulb.

Understand that even if the unit works it may not be working at it's best and might be headed for a problem as the aged parts drift from their original values.

It might be helpful if you post a pic of the complete receiver chassis and the faceplate and turntable on the unit.

Or at least the "R" number of the chassis.
