Magnavox Suitcase Phonograph Questions

by KD7CNH » Tue Feb 28, 2012 2:23 am

Thanks to the group in advance...wonderful site.
I have a record player ...been in the attic since the 70's.
Magnavox model number 25C246G..finish..G01V.?
Plugged it in and everything seem to work except for tons of hum..
Figured I'd clean the pots..double check wiring and reassemble for a second test.
More then likely will need a caps job as well.
Will add pics tomorrow if I've enough time.
The amp is marked a 501-01-10...50 watts.
Any one have a schematic available for the amp,and maybe a year of manufacture?
Sad to say I can remember when this was state of the art.
Can't wait to get it up and running ...got a great big box of 45's from the time .

The hum most definitly is bad capacitors.
Refrain from using it until they're replaced, or stress to the (expensive) germanium output transistors will cause them to fail too.
Also, sitting in the attic has dried out lubrication in the changer possibly dryrotting the drive idlers, and that needs attention as well.

I don't know if you got my PM. My opinion on that system is too much trouble. However, scramble you email here and I will send SAMS Photofact for you amp.

It's more of a learning process for me...and I end up with something that works.
Thanks.

Lee, I sent the SAMS. My reply about trouble is about the PM system. Other forums use PM's and I just don't get sometimes nor mine make it thru the system. Post some pictures of your set if you can. ID with model number as well as the amp number as you have provided can be helpful to others searching, even few years down the road.

Thanks to shedradio for the schematics and booklet...it's a perfect match,
I will reassemble slightly and get some pictures before the recap job..and a few to document the rebuild.
Looks like my mistake on 50 watts...looks like 11.
I agree this is more work then it's worth but a good training.
The neighbor came over today ...said he'd buy it when I was done.
HA HA HA not even fixed and my first sale (maybe).

Does anyone know if the Electrolytic cap C1 a/b still available any where?
Think I read some where in another thread about bypassing the old one with two new ones at the correct values.
Think I'll try and Mallory on Friday...see if they are even made anymore.
Dead batteries in camera till Friday also.
Lee/KD7CNH..
Guess I should be more specific....mag part # 270063-1

No need for an exact match.
Just remove the old unit, and replace with singles of the same or slightly higher values.

Thought I'd post a couple of before pictures of my project.
Will probably be a few weeks before I get a chance to start the cap job and further test.
I'll post a couple pictures after the repairs.
Thanks for the help and advice.
Thanks ..Lee/KD7CNH

I see about ten capacitors under that chassis that I'd rip out and replace.
All those black cylindrical ones.
And..... that main multi filter topside (shown under chassis in the square cutout)

Thanks to shedradios I have a parts list already made up..just need some time to run the other side of Portland for parts.
Wondering if you have any pictures of your repair bench??..test equipment ,tools ....
Some of us aspiring tech's would enjoy seeing a pro's set up.
Also a recomendation on a tube tester...I had a sencor 20 something years ago.
