Help Identifying a Magnavox Stereo

by Rhyph » Sun Apr 30, 2006 7:00 am

Hi everyone. I turned up this site on a Google search looking like it had allot of info about Magnavox "console" stereos. I hope this is the proper place to ask questions like this, since I saw no other real place to put it. 8)

My predicament is, the model number on it's tag is illegible but I have the serial number. I even have the manuals which are in perfect condition, but they reveal no model number information. I can do my best to describe what I have, and ultimately I'm seeking the model number to track down possible repair and/or replacement parts for it, I think.

All my mother could do was date it in the early to mid 1970's, since it was hers and was purchased right around the time I was born. It's a Magnavox, I guess you'd call it a console stereo. We've always referred to it as the blanket chest stereo though. It literally looks like it's in a blanket chest, with a single large hinged lid on top. It's cabinet is a dark wood finish with some decorative colored circular patterns on the front, a false keyhole impression near the top front-side, and the numerals "17 76" in black (I suppose in reference to the year 1776). It has left and right speakers both high/low range located on either side (I peeked inside for model info, none found). Inside the top of the cabinet after opening it's "lid" reveals on the left, a storage compartment/well, in the center-top an 8-track player (which works great still), center-bottom it's AM/FM radio/controls, and the right side has what I think is considered a fully automatic turntable. Hence my problem part.

The turntable is functional, however will no longer operate in auto. Unfortunately upon opening the rear of the cabinet I found a white nylon gear laying in the bottom of the cabinet. :? This does appear to "drive" the automatic part of the turntable with trying to take it's selector to "Auto" and it no longer will drop the record, and start playing it like I remember when I was little.

Any information would be a huge help, I can even snap off some good pictures and maybe put them up somewhere for people to see as I'm sure I would hope it would be of great help, just might be a couple of days.

I'd really like to get it repaired or maybe even replace the turntable if they are to be found.

Thanks 8)

That is soooo awesome, thanks for the reply! :P I've got the pictures taken, I'll still get them up here, just gotta get them from cam to site now, lol. Sounds like you have an awesome collection! 8)

This piece has allot of sentimental value to me, since I grew up with it, It was given to me under the unfortunate circumstances of my parents deciding it was time to part ways after 31 years of marriage this past year. :(

I had been all over eBay, but now hopefully with the model number I can expand to better searches.

BTW, my mother added that it and what was our families old matching Magnavox console TV were in "a collection" and were bought at the same time. I'll let her know of my findings. The TV parted ways with functionality after a bad moving trip about 10 years ago and we no longer have it.

Hi Rhyph, just read your post dated Apr 30 2006. Here's some info about your Magnavox Stereo. As mentioned by Michael, your Magnavox Stereo belonged to the Spirit of '76 Collection - a unique group of heirloom Magnavox stereo & television furniture designs commemorating your country's Bicentennial. The collection truly epitomizes and exemplifies Magnavox's reputation for innovative and artistic furniture craftsmanship. Design concepts of your country's early history were researched, documented, then incorporated into faithful reproductions as a fitting commemoration of the Bicentennial and as a tribute to your forefathers. The Spirit of '76 Collection were especially created to celebrate the 200th year of American independence. The Collection has designs so authentic, it's been awarded five Certificates of Commendation by the Early American Society. The Magnavox Spirit of '76 Collection is a beautiful way to take pride in your nation's heritage and your home.

As previously mentioned by Michael, your Magnavox Stereo is The Blanket Chest model 6561 is an authentic reproduction of a design from the Pennsylvania Dutch period of Colonial times. Utilizing Pine wood solids, it is enhanced by replicas of brightly colored folk art. Beneath its lid are a solid-state Stereo FM/AM Radio, full-size Stereo Record Changer, 8-track Tape Players, plus two 8" Bass Woofers and two 3 1/2" Tweeters.

All, just surfed in while looking for information on my "old" Magnavox console stereo. It is the dry sink model 6574, I believe. It has AM/FM, turntable, and 8 track player/recorder...that's right-recorder! I was looking for information about troubleshooting. When the knobs are turned there is a loud scratchy noise through the speakers. This will sometimes go away if the knobs are tapped. Also, is there a market for these old systems?

Thanks,
Jeff

TO the OP: You have a Maganvox micromatic record player I believe. Manufactured by Collaro in england. Needles are cheap on Ebay. Dannysneedles helped me out. I am in no way affiliated.

Hiram392: Pick up some DeOxit from radio shack or Ebay. Put this on all of the pots from the INSIDE. This means you'll have to pull the unit out which should be easy. I;ve done it a few times. Make sure you use it on the selector switch also. THis will take care of all of the oxidization that has accumulated over the years. THis is a common problem as some of these get stored outside due to their size and people just wanting to "get rid of them". As for value, not much to speak of besides sentimental value.
