DS 160 So Close! 2 questions

Alright- fully cleaned the mech and it looks and runs great! I am absolutely thrilled. When I picked this up 3 short weeks ago- nothing worked. Removed the clutch, cleaned the internals, lubed everything. We're cooking with gas! Two problems though.

(1) In my enthusiasm, I took the mech off the carriage/base to clean it (it actually needed to be taken off because it was so grimy). Now, it seems to be one slot off (i.e. when I select A1, it will go to the left of the record slot). I tried adjusting the record grill (or whatever it is called) using the allen head bolts, and now when I select U8 the record arm goes to the right of the last slot on the right. I did take the tormat off too and I wonder if that is the issue with the alignment. I feel like there is something I'm missing. I do have a manual I ordered from Always Jukin but I'm not seeing this particular issue. Any guidance from the sage experts out there? I do have Ron Rich's manual too, but didn't see this. I admit I may have overlooked it because I'm learning the vocabulary of jukeboxes.

(2) While I got a great deal on this jukebox, it does not have the ear speakers. I understand they're hard to obtain- but it does have the internal wiring for them. Any suggestions on substitutes (or does anyone have any for sale)? If I can't get the original speakers, I'm thinking that I might try something that looks reasonably close (considering the RadioShack Minimus7 - silver).

You purchased my Seeburg Mechanism Guide--thanks--now why did you do that, if you ainna gonna read it ??
You will need to read the Service Manual also--Hopefully you did not remove the TMU at the same time, as it, the record (grill)rack. lift arm and clutch will need re-alignment--not a job I like to do--Ron Rich

Hey Ron. I removed everything before receiving the manuals. You know the story- mech doesn't move, all online advice says clean everything well and order manuals (Maybe not in that order). Well- while waiting to receive the manuals, I started disassembling so I could clean things per the instructions. Everything has been cleaned, probably too well as I took it ALL apart- although I didn't actually open the tormat.

I'm looking at the manual now and I just want to make sure I get the alignment sequence right.

1) Adjust clutch 1-4 (do I need to do any of the other adjustments on the mech (e.g. Guide rollers, trip solenoid)?)
2) adjust magazine- horizontal position (did this initially, but will do again after clutch alignment)
3) align transfer arm 1 (again, will redo). I'm not sure if I need to do transfer arm 2
4) adjust tormat memory unit position

If things work at this point, is it safe to assume I don't need to change anything else- such as all of the pickup adjustments.

Thanks- and now I that I am equipped to "read ahead" hopefully I'll avert creating more work in the future. In hindsight, it makes perfect sense that I would throw off the alignment of everything.

I have no way to judge, if/what "damage" you may-may not have done--
I would guess that if you did not "turn any adjustment screws", you don't need to do so now---
I strongly suggest that you you do need to read, my "Mechanism Guide", prior to doing anything else--
AND--as far as I'm concerned, there is NEVER a good reason to open a Tormat--(Unless proven bad on a "MicroLog" model).

Thanks Ron. Looking at page 25 of your guide describing the mechanical sequence of operations right now. No adjustments made to anything so far, except for aligning the magazine to the transfer arm. No interest in opening the tormat.

IF, you did NOT move the lift arm assembly--align it to the rack first. Record rack should remain somewhat "centered". If it won't align with the rack centered, see "removing the clutch" in the Guide. Once that's correct, follow the alignment procedures in the Service Manual for the TMU, and it "should-odda-work"-- Ron Rich

Ron, I followed the instructions on page 41 of your manual about slipping a tooth on the clutch, and then aligned the magazine and tormat per the Seeburg manual. Works like a charm!! Thanks for the encouragement and guidance!

I put everything back together, put the mech back in the jukebox. Everything seems to be working properly.

It seems that this box has been set up for free play, but I'm not sure how to tell if it has been done the "right" way or the "wrong" way. Ive read about the solenoid in the selector panel always being active if set up incorrectly- it would seem that is something I could check with my dmm. Any other clues I should look for?

So- all I need now are the wing speakers...

Anyway--glad you have it working and have not done too much "damage"--
The pricing unit in a DS is a USPU-1--there is NO good way to "free play it". It was not designed to play for "free", therefore, like most, but not all, jukeboxes--"something" had to be done to accomplish this, that was not planned for. Some think that it's easy to do by removing the subtract pawl--yep--but that puts "undo pressure" on the cancel arm--others remove the credit wheel--causes the same problem, and I have seen a few where someone has "adjusted" the credit switch never to open--this will "eat up" the credit wheel-- Also-the most important reason this should not be tried, is the "latch bar solenoid" in the TES--It WILL catch fire, and burn up part of the cabinet, and all wires going to the USPU ! Therefore, IMHO, there is no "good" way to do this, other then an electronic, replacement credit unit. ( Yes--I sell one--PM me if you wish to purchase) Ron Rich

The latch bar solenoid used is an "intermittent duty" model. When "free played" mechanically, using the USPU, that solenoid is always energized--till it burns up !

Hey Ron- Good to know! I actually would like to revert it back to coin operation- so my kids can understand the value of money (so they can listen to mid 80s 45s!).

Anyway, i have another issue- that probably warrants a new thread.

When I got the jukebox, the socket for tube XV109 was empty. Once I got the mechanicals figured out, everything seemed to play well (good sound) and the missing tube didn't seem to have any noticeable effect. I ended up getting a replacement tube from Bill Bickers (who provides absolutely excellent customer service- seems to be part of the jukebox code of ethics).

When i put the tube in, everything seemed to be working OK- tube lit up, etc. I should mention that this amp has been recapped fairly recently.
However, when I selected a record, the jukebox started to make a horrible buzzing noise out of the speakers as soon as the mute circuit was closed and the needle hit the record. I couldn't hear the music because the noise was so strong. After the record ended, the buzzing goes away. If I take tube XV109 out, then things sound fine too.

Any guidance from the experts out there is appreciated.

I think that's the AVC tube (6BJ6 correct ?)--if you hear that, either that tube is bad, or the amp needs to be repaired---
