Nice machine, but it sounds like the record is worn or the reproducer needs a substantial rebuilding.

The cylinder has some mold damage. I rebuilt the reproducer a few years ago. Mold damage is very common here.

That would account for the distortion. Where I live -- San Francisco -- mold is also a major problem, along with mildew which, if not checked, has a tendency to coat 78s, along with paper storage sleeves, the insides of phonograph cabinets, (internal) horns, etc.

I cleaned it with rubbing alcohol years ago and it hasn't spread. I think it's dead.
