Info wanted on Grundig Majestic SO 205 U/S

by Majestic » Tue Jul 31, 2007 1:07 am

There is a person that keeps the local Goodwill stocked with various Grundig Majestic consoles and while I've debated picking one up for nearly a year, I finally brought home a smaller one today--the SO 205 U/S stereo console--and I am having trouble finding info about this model online.

The phonograph is missing, but I plugged it in and amazingly the first thing that I heard was a death metal song! I thought, "wow, what a radio!", but then as I tried to tune the radio I was having a lot of trouble. The dial barely budges as I spin the tuning knob round n' round. I finally got in on classical station (just slightly left of the college radio station it was on originally) and while I'm enjoying the sound as the tubes warm up, there is still a little interference and I'm afraid to seek out other channels on the dial for fear of losing what I was able to get in. Are there any tips on making sure the tuning knob is working properly? What do I need to do to pick up the international channels?

I also wanted to know what options I have for connecting the cord that went to the old phonograph to something else. I have other record players or I thought it might be neat to connect/wire it to a cd player or something. I guess I should start with where do I find the schematics? I've been looking and having found them yet.

Any information on this model would be appreciated. At first I thought I'd just have to clean it up and use it as a piece of furniture, but I love the sound of tube radios and I want this one to be working! Thank you in advance for any info you have!

Tuning

by Majestic » Tue Jul 31, 2007 3:01 am

I did just read in another forum that the dialing knob activates the tuning through use of a threaded pulley system. When I rotate the pulleys and threads themselves the frequency is changed, but they are still not being activated by movement of the dialing knob. The wheel moves freely, but the threads aren't catching. I can't see where if they are off the tracks or not because I can't get to the front of the system. I can only access it from the back. Where do I go from here?

Thanks again!

The dial cord has stretched out over time.

Yeah, none of them are being rotated by the movement of the dial. Is it easy to replace these? I have taken the unit apart so that I can get to the strings.

Unless it has broken, usually you can just retie it to the tensioning spring in a shorter place. You can also buy dial cord. But make a diagram of the path before you take it apart, or you might not get it together again. Also note that the cord usually wraps around the shaft of the tuning knob several times.

The record changer was probably a Perpetuum-Ebner Rex, Rex Deluxe, or PE-66.

Is there any hope of rewiring if they came off their track and I don't know exactly how they were originally? Is there any sort of diagram that would show me how? :?

Grundig S0205U/s is covered by SAMS 687-7. Includes schematic, parts list, dial cord stringing, etc. Send your address to shedradios at comcast dot net and I'll mail you the SAMS, you copy and mail back. My scanner is not working. Or if near a large library check with them for SAMS Photofact Data and get copy there. Or order from SAMS site.
