Roackola 1493 selection problem

by clones » Wed Jul 17, 2013 8:37 pm

Hi
i have been checking out this machine, the selection of records works partially for example A5, A6, A7, A8, A9, A0 and A3 will all select properly, but A1,A2 and A4 will result every time in the selection lever for A0 being moved into the play position. This happens also when you go down through the various letter and number combinations,i stopped when i got as far as the letter E. Anyone any idea what to check or look for

Clones,
My guess, and hope, would be a visible "short" in the keyboard--down the harness-thru the plug--and, worst case--inside the selection drum---use a meter--- Ron Rich

Hi
Did some cleaning, and its now at the following stage A1 through to K1(A sides) and A2 to K2(A sides) are attempting to select, the selection pin i can see is being moved by the selection lever but is not being pushed the whole way down and is springing back, B sides of the record seem to select at these points. Regarding A4 through to K4 registering as wrong selections at A0 to K0, it would appear that this is random and will sometimes select at A0 to K0 and sometimes at the correct position at A4 to K4. No visible shorts at the keyboard, have to check the harness yet, not really keen on dismantling the wobble plate, they are difficult to reassemble

Can you post a photo of that mechanism ??--you have me thinking, that I am thinking of the wrong style mechanism pinbank--I did not think a 1493 had a "wobble plate" in it ?

It appears to methat the start coil area is awful dirty--plunger appears to be rusty--and I do not see the copper, U shaped "helper" spring-? See your parts book-- Ron Rich

I know what you mean about the helper spring but there doesn't seem to be the a place to attach it (hole for the screw and nut for attaching it) so i will have to improvise. However on checking the machine tonight there's an additional problem in that the write in motor is not starting when a selection is made, the write in relay is energising when a selection is made but the motor is not moving, so i will have to troubleshoot that first, it might be a coincidence but this latest problem started after i removed the part to clean the various relays and plug connections, will update if i make further progress

Perhaps that spring was not used on the small pinbank ??
As for the AC, Write-in motor--those can be extreemly difficult to "align", if the two screws holding the armature are touched--if out of alignment, they will not operate. I read about a "trick" to align it, some years ago, but can't recall exactly how it's done, except that you "bang it"--hopefully someone else will chime in--- Ron Rich

Hi
Got the write in motor sorted, cleaned the relays again so i have it now back to selecting, there seems to be no way to fit the copper spring, its not mentioned in the parts section of the manual. At this stage its selecting from A3 to K3 up to A0 to K0. A1 to K1 and A2 to K2 are still not selecting, the hammer of the write in moves the pin but it is not going fully into place and is springing back. I'll try replacing the write in coils and possibly the wobble plate, the plate can't be cleaned much more

I think I would try cleaning the slip rings ( do you have Deoxit available ?), on the WI arm, and the "start coil" plunger, before I would change the WI hammer coil ?? Ron Rich

I have cleaned the slip rings with isopropyl alcohol, will clean write in arm and plunger coil. Its almost as if the selection pins that won't select are stiffer than the rest

I have run into slip rings, on RockOla's, that NOTHING, short of Deoxit, would "clean". Did you clean the hammer coil and start plungers ? Ron Rich

Hi
Cleaned the hammer coil and plunger, but its bugging me why it will select from A3 - K3 to A0 -KO and won't at A1-K1 to A2 -K2 and sometimes from A4 to K4, it this was someone else posting i would definitely say the slip rings or problems with plug connections, whats the active ingredient in Deoxit, maybe the isopropyl i am using is not doing a good enough job, anyway i will let you know how i get on

Magic, is the active ingredient--I don't know, it's not listed--but it DO work, good, and, well, on stuff that slides--not good on open switch contacts, however, IMHO !
