First Juke DS160

by Dewman » Wed Mar 28, 2012 2:51 pm

Just wanted to say "Hi!"
I was told I would need a membership here to gain access to people that will be able to point me in the correct direction to fix/restore my juke (s).

I just bought a DS160... it does not have the ear speakers, so like a lot of people before me, I am looking for a functional set.

I have the manual on the way (alwaysjukin), I have a copy of Ron Rich's Mech Guide.

Surely I will have questions, but I am going to wait until I have the manuals and have given them a read before I post any here.

She is in good shape. Was bought in 1979-ish from an op and has been played up until last week. I bought it from the (77 year old couple) two days ago for $300, because they are going to FL and no longer want to deal with it.

I need a new key made as the one they supplied is broken in half.
I need the ear speakers as they are not present
I will be removing black paint from the side decals (someone painted over them?) So advice on that would be great.

It has a stuck clutch, and when I manually tripped it, it played a random record, then I tripped it again, it played another, then one more time. Now when I credit it it sounds like it registers, but then when you try to select a record, The selection does not stick (button wont stay down), but if you hold the button down, then push the number button, something clicks on the back door, but nothing happens after that.

It did sound pretty damn cool for those 3 songs though!...lol I love the look of this machine, especial with the lights off! (I had a few dates like that when I was younger...lol)

Just a very cool juke, I like it is the last tube, but has the solid state memory unit. I should mention, this will scan using the service switch and changes direction nicely, though the whole thing should be cleaned and regreased.

It is killing me to wait for the manuals to get into this... kind of like opening gifts on Xmas when you were a kid then not getting to play with them cuz you have to go to grandma's for the day!

Just wanted to say "Hi", tell the story behind the juke. I will snap some pics, and post the video I have in a follow up in a few minutes, I just need to upload it to Youtube first.

So here we are!

Sorry for the narrow view... iphones

Hi Andy,
Welcome ! --and thank-you for the purchase of my guide !
I would have written that it was my "best advice" for you to un-plug the phono, turn it facing the wall and wait till after you have READ the "Information and Operation" manual, the Service Manual ( at least the "text" on each component), and perhaps at least looked through the parts book--then read my "guide", at least to the "DS" section. But, since you have written the thing about being required to go to Grandmas' --I think that you should go to her house--just take the books with you (you did not have anything else to do while you were there---).
From what you have written, I assume that the phono is (poorly) modified to work without coins. To test my assumption, try the following and let me know what, if anything happens--With the Service Switch in the "operate position ( all the way to the right), press and hold any letter button down, while holding that down, press any number button--anything happen ?
I doubt the clutch is "stuck" also, from what you have written--
The sides on this model were painted, not "decal ed". No advice here, except I think that someone did do re-pro decals, at one time ? Check above this post in the "announcements---where to find -- parts--" posts.
The key can be purchased at www.needles4jukeboxes.com

Hey Rich!
Very nice to meet you!

I really didn't expect to do a whole lot until I have all the manuals in hand. I have a basic understanding of pinballs, and a really good one of arcades, but this is my first juke, so before I do much more than clean it, I just opened it up, tried to familiarize myself with the contents, and get the lay of the land, but until I take juke 101 (which will require the reading) I am really not going to have a good grasp of what I need to do and what and how this all relates to each other. I do know the original caps are in it, and there is a set of wires that were cut and left taped together (I assume this is part of the "hack" for the credit switch someone put on the back).

I did power her up, held down "E", then pressed "1" (white rabbit) and there was a click in the back on the door. From looking at it I would bet it was coming from the selector panel and not the amp... but again, I haven't read up[ so that means nothing....lol

I did read through some of the posts, so I tried manually pulling the solenoid after pressing down on "E" and it latched... then I pressed "1" and it latched. When I released the solenoid, both buttons unlatched and then.... NOTHING HAPPENED!....lol

So I would bet either the solenoid needs replacing, or something isn't firing it once the credit is registered.

I think I am going to (get this) use some paint remover and a q-tip to see if I can get the black of the Seeburg emblem. Cleaning and things like this I can do without hurting anything...lol

I also need to razor trim a small piece where the paint is flaking on the glass and hit it with some triple thick. I will likely buy a whole new piece of glass when all is said and done... but right now that is putting the cart before the horse!

Thanks! And I will read through the manuals and follow up as I get going. Can't wait!

PS just ordered a couple of keys and a new key and a new Fort lock for the coin door. Thank you for the info!

Congrats on the "up-grade" ( "Pins to jukes") Just one thing,"Fort locks" do not fit the coin door very well--Seeburg used "Illinois" brand--
Have fun !

Okay, found a pair of working Ear Speakers... pretty good price on them as well. I am going on a raid this weekend for 45's, wall boxes, and some Juke parts.
Hopefully the manual I ordered last week will get here in time for that!

Records going to come with sleeves and original labels for the machine, so that will be great. Also, he has about 30,000 45's

Hopefully this means I will have the manual, speakers, records & some parts to start working on this. I have a feeling this is going to be a lot of... found an issue, need a part... order a part, replace... find another issue, need a part, order part, fix the problem... find a problem...lol

back to cleaning!

I actually took them apart, so that I am only cleaning the grill, then I clean the plastic back, all separated from the speaker itself.

It is a germaphobe thing... just easier to pull everything apart to clean so that I know it is clean... wait until I really clean the juke... piece by piece...lol

While you are there--you might check the caps--replace if necessary--

Actually already done!

These things took me the better part of a day to get right, still need one part, (rca jack) on one, wire is there, but no jack.

This means the juke is going to take me the better part of 6 months to get clean and running at best...lol

UHG! It is going to be awesome when she starts up again though!!!

If I may ask, where were fortunate enough to locate the ear speakers?

Thank you
Darrell

Darrell,
I was able (through a couple of friends) track down an old Juke-op/juke repair guy about 60 miles from me. I lucked out and he had a pair, they were dirty and needed a new plug, but I tested both speakers and they worked... they weren't cheap.

I can see if he has another pair... though I am not sure what shape they would be in, and what he would want. Or I can even see if I can pass his info on to you?

He is out of the business, so it took about 12 emails with his son before I could even get his number... but hey, never hurts to ask right?

Just let me know,
Thanks
Andy

Andy
Welcome to the board. You were very fortunate. I passed on buying a few nice Juke Boxes because I was unable to locate any ear speakers for sale! Did you put new caps in the ear. Speakers and if so who did you buy the caps from?

I have two DS100 and two DS160 Seeburgs and enjoy them very much. I am sure that when yours is up and running that you will be very happy with it.

Hey thanks!

I replaced the caps, but didn't have to buy them as they were given to me with the speakers... the juke doesnt work, but I connected them to the "audio out" on a set top DVD player and they played great... sounded better than I thought!
I cannot wait to get this juke up and running. Bought 2,000 45s this weekend, picked out my 80, now I need to start trouble shooting...lol
