magnavox portable - air sound/one channel

Got a nice playing 1963 Magnavox "power transistor" portable that plays well,
except for one channel. Although the sound from the record comes through
the left side just fine, there is an annoying loud air sound also just on that channel.
I can almost "drown it out" with high volume from the record, but it remains on
all levels of sound. It just ruins listning to any records on low volume levels.
Is this something easy to fix, or do I have a major problem here?
